So as much as this fall semester have been hellish for me and probably to many of you, I think it's very important that we all keep our spirits high. My theory is that if I was able to come this far, I may as well go all the way. My past six months have been filled with sleepless nights spent with books, getting to know your school library like the back of your hands, chasing after TAs for questions, simplifying your life beyond basic essentials, seeing your friends drop out of pre-med because "it's too hard", learning not to tell other people that you are "pre-med" but instead "bio major" so that they won't form stereotypes against/in favor of you, and constantly being challenged physically and emotionally - and being surprised that you can do it and that you are stronger than you thought.
Most of you probably have thought of what kind of grades you are most likely going to get/grades you would like to get/ and grades you would not like to get. Aside from grades alone, I've been reflecting a lot about what I have been doing outside of school.
This year, I'm taking Organic Chemistry I & II with labs, Physics I & II with labs, Cell biology with a lab, Genetics, Calculus I, Human Diseases, Gen Chem II lab and Gen bio II. Solid 34 credits of sciences. To some this may look like a suicidal schedule, but for others on SDN, this may seem like nothing compared to your own load.
Sure, getting a 4.0 is going to be a huge accomplishment for anyone as it is a good reflection of your hard work and dedication academically. To me what is also important is how I was able to weave in all the other activities outside of school with my studies. I've been a volunteer at Humane Society of Tampa Bay as an animal adoption assistant, volunteer at a local hospital as an art therapy assistant, volunteer at local AIDS clinic and I was lucky enough to go on medical volunteering trip in August to a rural village in Mexico where I learned some valuable lessons regarding medicine, life and power of healing.
I know that most of you are probably either A) accepted to a medical school already and couldn't be happier, B) still waiting anxiously for an acceptance letter from your dream school, or like me, C)Preparing to apply in June. I give props to everyone regardless because I know and you know that being pre-med is a long, difficult road not taken by the majority. Keep it up and don't give in. I wish everyone a very good ending of this semester.

USFpremeduno...

who o u hvae for genetics...i had umm cant remmeber his name...hes bald...umm, he likles scuba diving and hes doing research about it or osmething...it has that annoying mandatory listserv...start with a G?

that human diseases course...isnt that an internet course??? that was really simple...is that the one you;re talking about?

The genetics course is scheduled for Spring and my prof's name is Dr. Yoder. I think he's relatively new and I know that he did his ph D. at Harvard. Why he is at USF, I don't know.
The human diseases course is not a web course. I wish - wouldn't that be nice? It's a 3000 level, 3 credit course. That will be my easiest class for next semester.

ouch. Good luck dude! Just remember.. SLEEP IS YOUR ENEMY!

Wow! All sciences eh? I always have at least one GE in there, just to pad the gpa a bit. Good luck up at SF!

It looks like you have your work cut out for you this year. My spring semester senior year was similar and I pulled out with a 4.0.

Here is my bit of advice: Work hard, Play hard. When it comes time for breaks make sure you really TAKE A BREAK. You will get burnt many times during this tough year. Keep up with your activities but minimally. If you can cut back your volunteer hours do it...and don't feel guilty about it. This will definitely decrease your stress level.

Best of luck!

PS. MAKE SURE YOU SAVE YOUR PAPERS! I had to rewrite a twenty page paper that was munched by the computer the night before it was due and the day before my genetics final. Not fun.

Thank you, Redhead.
I knew that this year was going to be my toughest. It's definitely not the best way to spend your pre-application year but I had to in order to apply this coming June.

I tend to perform better at night than in the mornings... but.. so hard to stay up late with the book. 😀

Same here, I'm such a not morning person.
However, my first class for next semester starts at 9:00 AM. I'm going to have such hard time getting up in the morning.

sometimes i don't understand why people try to rush thru being young and living. you can still get into med school without getting a 4.0 this semester. you can still get into med school by taking another semester/year to slow things down.
different strokes for different folks i guess.

2 things for you:

1. don't sweat it if you don't get a 4.0; most of us who made it to medical school sure as heck didn't....in fact, some of us have been known to have GPAs as low as <gasp> 3.5 or even LOWER! Shocking!

2. my philosophy in undergrad was always, "if i can't make it through this, then i'll never be able to make it through med school." try telling yourself this the next time you feel the need to whine about how hard your semester is, because it certainly helped me put things into perspective when i was in your shoes. Now that i'm in med school, it's changed to "if i can't handle this, then i'll never be able to handle intern year!" in the long run, no one is going to care if you got a 4.0 in a 17 credit science-filled semester or two. if you don't get a 4.0, it's not going to keep you out of med school. just focus on learning the material (which will help you later for the MCAT) and keep doing the things you love, whether it's volunteering, playing video games, hanging out with your friends, whatever. There really is no use beating yourself up all through undergrad over grades. That's what medical school is for! 🙂

Sprockette, I totally agree with what you had to say. I know that I don't need a 4.0 to get into med school. I'm taking such ridiculous courseload because those are all of my pre-reqs.

I took a semester off prior to this and I was also a business major during my sopho/junior year so I am pretty behind.

I did doubt myself at the beginning of the eyar when I started but I have realized that there's a very good chance of me getting something close to 4.0.

I'm not a perfectionist nor am I overachiever - I couldn't live with myself if I was a perfectionist. I'm just trying to do the best I can to get to where I want to be. And I'm sure you could relate.

Hi

Is this 17 hours per semester or 34 hours per semester?

34 credits per semester - that would probably drive anyone to the wall.

I'm taking 16 credits right now(Organic I, Physics I with lab, Cell bio with lab, Calculus, Bio II lab) and 18 next semester.

Oh yeah, I am sooooo looking forward to it.
