I'm landing at IAH (George Bush Intercontinental Airport) and need to get to Baylor. How did other interviewees get there? Public transportation? Taxi? Super shuttle? Texans Shuttle?

I also have to make a flight immediately after my interview so is there a fast and reliable way back to IAH?

I took the Super Shuttle from IAH to my hotel near Baylor (student housing wasn't available on my interview date). It got me there, but it took about an hour and a half (stops to let others off) and the driver was nuts! I thought drivers from my neck of the woods were bad. Sheesh!

As for the return to IAH, I took Super shuttle as well. However, I was leaving the next day and had a few hours to get to the airport. If you're really in a rush, I would recommend a taxi or some other non-shared transportation. Maybe you can find someone to give you a ride? I think it takes about 20-30 minutes to get to IAH from the medical center. I hope you have enough time to make your flight.

Baylor's a great school! Good luck on your interview!

Thanks! I guess I'll try Super Shuttle or something on the way to Baylor and just break down and pay for a taxi on the way back.

Just curious: how is the public transportation system in Houston?? Anyone?

Just curious. When are you interviewing? I have an interview there on Jan 4th.

I'll be there this Friday (12/14). Good luck on your interviews!

Oh okay...anyway, Supershuttle will definitely be the best option! Saves a whole lot of money. Good luck to you too! Hope your interview goes well.

Why not rent a car? Parking isn't that expensive at the TMC -- though you should look at a map, b/c it is a bit confusing. If you rent through Enterprise they only charge (I believe) $15/day for being under 25, assuming you are. Together, it will probably be cheaper than the shuttle one way/cab the other way, and you get to explore some of Houston if you want.

That's a great option!

For your question on public transport, it's pretty dismal. The train doesn't go to the airport. Gotta take buses (or so I was told at my interview). I was a bit disappointed. I'm used to using the T in Boston, SEPTA in Philly, or the NYC subways.

Hm.. I just checked Priceline for car rentals and the cheapest I can find is $36/day ($50 total with taxes and fees). And then when you factor in parking for the day, the price will go up. I guess I will just stick to the shuttle and taxi plan since that way I don't risk getting lost on the way to the airport!

Congrats carwreck on the Baylor acceptance? Is that your top choice??

yeah public transportation is really bad here in Houston. Better to take the shuttle or something.

If you're over 25, you can probably get a good car rental deal. Otherwise, take the Galveston Limo service. It'll take you straight in from the airport (I think).

Wow! Did they really name an airport after Bush....?

I think its after his father Former Pres. George Bush Sr. Lol.. but I had that reaction too!

Thanks for all the info everyone! I'll probably take Super Shuttle... that is unless anyone wants to pick me up! 😛

I think it's named after G. H. W. Bush, our current president's father. Which wasn't that bad of a guy if you ask me.

I35 north to exit 335

😕?? There's a I35 in Houston (maybe you are referring to I45)? Unless they completely remapped the freeways in Houston while I was gone, I thought you had to go south from IAH to get to Baylor.

it was a very weak joke. that's how you get to Baylor U (from the south), not Baylor College of Medicine.

I think a taxi from IAH to Baylor (or vice versa) tops $40. I remember checking it on a taxi site's trip calculator thing. Maybe the car rental option is cheaper?

Thanks! It's definitely in my top 3.

Insane, right? At least it's not as bad as Reagan National Airport.

How do you name an airport after the guy who fired 11,000 air traffic controllers?

or re-name an airport that was named after the founding president of our nation (aka George Washington). reagan? come on. after the guy makes up stories about he was in the war and completely ignores the AIDS epidemic. . .amongst other things of course.

When it comes to Houston...if you need to get anywhere downtown ALWAYS fly into Hobby. IAH is the nicer and better airport but for your own sanity Hobby is love. Houston traffic is a bitch 24/7. Going from IAH down 45 is fun🙄 I hate it

i second this. go with the car rental. you'll leave when you want. no need to worry if the taxi is coming, etc. houston's not that confusing. just print out your maps on mapquest before you go and you'll be set. i did this in richmond.

parking at the tmc is $8 for the whole day IIRC.

where off 45 is IAH? i drove in for my interview, so i have no conception of this.

From IAH take Richey Road north and it take you right to 45 and from there just take 45 straight to 610. Of course I stay off 610 ( I STILL get lost) I just take normal roads and Kirby drive takes me right to the TMC

Did they finish up the work on 59 ever? Houston traffic is not bad 24/7. Hobby is a sad little airport too.

heh, I saw that you nearly sent the dude to wacko 🙂

Thanks everyone for the responses! I'll be renting a car and mapquest-ing before I arrive.

59 is always broke down. It's stupid. 59 is much worse than 45. I do believe it is the slowest freeway in the whole city. 59 and driving on a cell go hand and hand

59 is only really bad from Rice U area westward going towards the galleria. It has always been fine for me when I need to get to IAH (I refuse to call it Bush Intercontinental)

Houston is just generally a dull city!

Oh and you should check out www.hotwire.com if you want some cheap rental car rates.

If you take a taxi back you will end up paying $50+ anyway

Where are you staying?
I ask that b/c if you are staying at a hotel in the medical center then I would literally just keep the car in the hotel and walk over to Baylor (not far away at all)

Also...in terms of general directions from IAH:
Take 59S to the Kirby exit...Take Kirby south (make a left onto Kirby) to University Ave...make a left onto University Ave (there is only one University Ave/Blvd...so don't worry about getting lost..heyyyyy you'll get to see my alma mater...LOL)...University Ave will take you straight into the medical center.

haha when i first saw the title of this thread, i read it as "how to get INTO baylor"

and then my excitement quickly faded away...
