i tried to look online, but i couldn't find directions via the train. is it better to get to johns hopkins via plane into baltimore, or via train (Penn Station?) which will put you closer?

Thanks for helping!

once you get into baltimore (wearing your suit and briefcase, of course) just ask the locals how to get to Johns Hopkins, they'll help.

Flash a big wad of money around too.

um, i was really looking for some HELPFUL advice. for example, how much does a cab cost from the train station? the airport? is there public transportation from each? how much does each cost? is the hassle worth it? things along those lines...

sorry, we're fresh out of that. in all honesty, call JHU and ask someone there. You're a big kid who wants to be a doctor, you can figure this stuff out.

Didn't the link provided in the e-mail invitation provide specific information about transportation? If you did not receive that link, let me know, and I will get it to you.

The train is easier in that it puts you at Penn Station, which is connected to the metro...

I prefer plane, so this is what you would do then:

Once you gather your luggage, walk towards to the international departure area...

1. Take the light rail North- (toward Hunt Valley). After a number of stops, you will have to change to the metro. There are a few different light rail stops that you can change over, but the best is probably the Lexington market stop

2. Take Metro East to Johns Hopkins Hospital - If you arrive during the day, you can actually stay underground and enter the Hospital through the Outpatient Center, but it's sometwhat tricky. I suggest going above ground. You will be right across the street from medical campus.

Hope that helps

I take a taxi from BWI to Johns Hopkins University like 4-5X a year. Fare generally averages around $35 and it takes about half an hour. Of course, that's to the undergrad campus. If you're going directly to the medical school, I guess it'll cost about $5-10 less than that.

If you take a taxi from Penn Station to the med school, I would estimate a $10 cab fee. I've never actually done it before so I don't know for sure.

There was a post about this a while ago. I'm too lazy to search for it, but in answer to your question, Penn Station is way closer/cheaper cab ride than BWI. Cab shouldn't be more than $10-15, time depends on traffic, give yourself 25 minutes to be sure, but I don't think it'd be normally more than 15.

If you rent a car. Take 195 West to 95 North from BWI. Then take 395 North. Take a right on Pratt Street and continue and take a left on Broadway. Its about a half hour and parking is about 10 bucks. Its all up to you though.

I took a cab from BWI to the Broadway building and it cost right at $50. It was during a high traffic time, though.

If you fly, you have 4 options from BWI:
1.) MARC train: by far the best option for money & time. It only runs on the weekdays, and you have to catch a shuttle that runs every 10 minutes on the ground floor outside of BWI. You take it to the BWI Rail Station, where you can catch a MARC train going to Penn Station in Baltimore. The ticket costs less than 5 dollars, and the ride is 20 minutes to Penn Station. From there, you can either take a cab or the JHU Homewood-JHMI shuttle.

2.) Light rail: If you walk on the ground floor of BWI all the way around (away from Southwest), you will come to a rail that comes directly to BWI (no shuttling). The ticket machines are outside and the ticket costs $1.60, might need exact change. The length of the ride is HIGHLY VARIABLE. Depending on traffic (it cuts through parts of downtown!), you are looking at a ride anywhere from 30 min to an hour. Some of the light rails stop at Penn Station, SOME DO NOT. Always safer to get off at the University at Baltimore stop, which is 2-3 blocks from Penn Station. Again, from there, you can take the cab or JHU shuttle.

3.) Super Shuttle: On the ground floor of BWI, there are several Super Shuttle booths. For 19 dollars + x tip dollars, they will take you whereever you want in Baltimore. However, the wait for the shuttle can vary, up to a hour during peak periods, and the drive depends on how many passengers are on the shuttle.

4.) Cab. Most expensive. Baltimore cab drivers love to take the scenic route, and they upped the rates not too long ago.

If you take the train (or take light rail or MARC from BWI), you have 2 options from Penn Station
1.) Homewood-JHMI shuttle: On either side of Penn Station (outside), there are two shuttle stops. The North Charles stop is the Northbound shuttle, going to Homewood campus. The St. Paul stop is the Southbound shuttle, going to JHMI. The schedule is here: http://www.parking.jhu.edu/shuttles_jhmi-homewood.html
Now those departure times are from Homewood (undergrad campus), add anywhere from 5-15 min to those times for arrival at Penn Station for pickup. Also note that some shuttles are marked as EXPRESS shuttles, and DO NOT stop at Penn Station. The ride takes about 8-15 min from Penn Station, depending on traffic.

2.) Cab. Price & time depends on traffic, if you pay more than 15 you got ripped.

I've done every one of these modes of transportation, and they all work provided the situation fits. If you are brand new to Baltimore and if you are coming on interview day, I'd suggest cabbing it or using Super Shuttle (careful with shuttle), because timing the MARC and Light Rail is kind of hard with all the airport/Penn Station shuttling and stuff. If you have been to Baltimore and are familiar with the transportation system, and/or if time is not of the essence (ie if you aren't coming on interview day, but the night before), I would say MARC or Light Rail, preferably the former.

Actually in the past, getting INTO jhu wasn't that tough. Their acceptance rate the year I applied for undergrad was something like 23%
