Hello Sdn,

I got this break and want to spend some time reading some good books.

I really want to increase my IQ and memory for the upcoming studies.

Do U know any good books?

I have already gotten Thinking Strategically [game theory].

Do you know some other good ones? Maybe to get some kind of guide about getting into med schools.

Please no post, go and party. I like reading.

Easy way to work on memory is get a deck of cards and shuffle them. Then either try to remember to order of cards, or which I find fun, is starting with the deck face down, draw a card look at it and place it face down in another pile, when you get to the last card, predict what it is, and see if you are right. I've done this successfully numerous times, or at least gotten number is suit color right,

Or you could remember digits of pie, learn to solve a Rubik cube using the Jessica Friedrich or any other advanced method (contains a large handful of algorithms to memorize for specific cases), learn a non-phonetic language like Chinese or Japanese, or you could do brain teasers. If you like math you could try looking at ans solve old Putnam, IMO, USAMO, and AIME, questions.

You can't actually increase your IQ. But as for logic, reasoning, and memory, there are plenty out there. Go to your library and check a few out. I recommend books on 'lateral thinking' and, specifically, "The Harvard Medical School Guide to Achieving Optimal Memory". My dad got it for me three years ago as sort of a joke present and I accidentally took it with me for a 14 hour plane ride. Ended up being a pretty involving and useful read. 👍

get piracetam before FDA bans it

Do crossword puzzles! They help with both memory and logic. The memory bit because crosswords often use the same clues or words repeatedly, and the more you remember the better you'll do.

play chess, train for chess, do chess puzzle, study chess
it will help you out immensly
i have been playing for 15 years and it has made my memory and logic so good

Start studying for the MCAT and doing practice questions, that was a great advancement in logic for me.

I like sudokus. I don't know how much the logic applies to studying, but I guess it at least makes you think in different ways than usual.

I'd also second millepora's advice that studying for the MCAT really helped--moreso the logic behind practice test questions, since the content is basically memorization with some understanding of concepts. But reasoning through which answers were wrong definitely helped my critical thinking, and obviously with the test itself.

you could get brain age. i love doing those simple math operations... so fast!

jk. i like sudokus. board games like settlers of catan is also somewhat stimulating (depending on who you play with).

sweet! simon online.

Agreed.

What are some other ones commonly found in workout supps? Vinpocetine I believe...increases cerebral blood flow.

A great product is Focus-XT on bodybuilding.com.

If you can get past the 200mg caffeine in it, it has a lot of good nootropics that are very safe and natural

Thank you for all your responses.

I think I like this idea. I have already taken only Gen& Bio I, do you know which

section/book should I start working on? Few months ago I got verbal 101 Passages and it improved me much, but now I don`t want to open it until my junior year [prep time for MCAT]. I am afraid I will exhaust all good questions sources really early.

Any Idea on what should I start?

To improve logic, take a higher level math class. And when I say higher level, I mean beyond calculus and differential equations. Especially a class that is based entirely on proofs and the like.

I have a crazy idea for learning logic. Why not, oh I don't know, take a philosophy logic class?

it looks like math with letters!👍

I have had absolutely no luck with Piracetam. My roommate swears by it, but it doesn't do jack for me. 🙁

I read the book Your Memory : How It Works and How to Improve It, and some of the techniques it discussed helped me memorize a lot of anatomy

Everyone has given some helpful suggestions, but if you're feeling pretty masochistic you could always try your hand at LSAT logic puzzles.

Hey guys, this goes out to everyone. i was just wondering if everyone could post their favorite books to read, books that they believe helped changed the way they think about things, books that inspire them, books that keep them really interested... Just good books to read. I would start a new forum or thread, but unfortunately im too stupid to figure it out. If someone would like to help me with that that'd be awesome. But Anyways, yeah, i was just wondering what types of books you guys read in your spare time, what reading would you like to do, who are your favorite authors, because its my belief that reading actually helps us concentrate better, helps us sleep better, keeps our minds sharp, and relieves our mind (except forced academic reading), but thanks guys, if u have time of course, I'd really appreciate it and im sure a lot of other students here would as well.

If your haven't already- I found taking computer programming classes really helped my ability to "think hard".

Also if you want something more "recreational" David Skalansky has written some pretty interesting poker books that are highly analytical and definitely have implications for non-poker areas of thought/analysis if your good at making connections between seemingly unrelated subject areas.

You can start a new thread by going to the bottom of the posts and clicking on the blue button at the bottom left that says new thread.

Anyways, there are three books that have really changed my outlook on life and they are all novels, and well known.

1984
Sometimes a Great Notion
The Grapes of Wrath

I don't know why they did, but they just did. Other people will probably point to non-fiction stuff, but different strokes I guess.

I'd like to add every novel Vonnegut wrote to that list.
