Hi there,

I'm starting a DVM degree in University of Veterinary Medicine in Budapest, Hungary in September. I'm 25, so have a little more life and practical experience than those fresh out of high school or equivalent.

Having worked for and shadowed numerous fantastic small animal vets I am certain, as much as is possible before the degree even starts, that I would like to be a specialist surgeon. I absolutely loved every second of every surgery I've ever watched. Seeing the animals come in in various degrees of pain and go home a few days later significantly better off is a fantastic feeling. The attention to detail, the hands on nature and the singular focus of surgery all play to my strengths. I would happily do surgery recreationally, the thought of getting paid to do it is very motivating.

1. I was wondering if any specialist surgeons or those in the know could fill me in on the steps I'd have to take to reach this goal. I know that my University isn't one of the most prestigious in the world, but would high grades overcome this shortfall? Is there much snobbery in the application process? I was previously attending a "top 100 in the world" University but in an unrelated field.

2. What can I do during my degree, other than get high grades, to help in the application for internships and residencies?

3. What are the steps that lead to an internship, is there a standardised test? I'm in Europe but would be willing to travel temporarily to anywhere to achieve this goal.

4. Are there any networking tips that I could use to meet specialist surgeons?

I've emailed all the specialist surgeons in my country and a few of them got back to me with offers of shadowing and work experience so that's a promising start.

Thanks very much for taking the time to read this far.
