Alright, this may be the dumbest thread ever made but I'd really like to know how some stuff is pronounced. I don't want to show up to an interview or something and say the wrong thing...

PCOM: (pee-cahm) or (pee-see-oh-em)?
WVSOM: (double-you-vee-som)?
NYIT-COM: I don't even have a guess.

And what about AACOMAS? I've been saying (ay-ay-coh-mas) but I have no idea if that's right and I'm afraid to say the name in public.

I'm sure they won't care. And you properly saying AACOMAS in public will not benefit them much because 19/20 will still not know what that is! haha.

Are you a reapplicant?

Nope, this is my first time! Didn't really expect to be in a constant state of anxiety like this haha

This should be a fun thread. Here's how I say them.

PCOM - just like it looks (pee-cahm)
WVSOM - I pronounce the whole thing (West Virginia School of Medicine)
NYIT-COM - Not applying here, so rarely ever say it, but when I do I say "NYT College of Medicine" - yep, I leave out the "I" -- just flows better without the I
AACOMAS - (ay-ay-coh-mas) -- as in más or more in spanish

As for the rest of the schools, most of them I just say their first name -- Marian, Campbell, Nova, Kansas City
Others its, LMU, DMU, ACOM

How does one pronounce PNWU. That has been one of the hardest to say so I resort to just saying the full name. 😀

I relate to the feels very much! The stress is different than the stress of taking the MCAT. It's this lingering cloud of "you haven't turned in all your secondaries you're losing your slot right now!"

I'm finally done with all the secondaries I've received (Drexel and Rowan are still holding out on me). I feel like I never sleep though. I'm awake obsessing about school all night and I wake up every day with my heart racing as I lunge for my phone to see if I got any important emails.

I know! It's been two days and I've checked my phone for emails every hour. Congrats on the II for The Commonwealth Medical College btw!

LECOM-Seton Hill -> Lee-com See-ton Hill (and NOT Set-ton Hill).

That's how the Shuttle Driver (Randy) from the Ramada Hotel told me to say it 🙂

Actually, the correct way is to pronounce the acronym as if it were a word. Whenever two consonant are adjacent and do not form a coherent sound, just insert an "O" for osteopathic. So for example I am applying to "cockum," "pockum," and "mossoukum" (CCOM, PCOM, MSUCOM).

I learned this from a city bus driver in Denver who outranks Randy the Shuttle Driver at the Ramada.

Right, I agree with you (and the city bus driver). "Lee-com" sounds very much like "Leekum", so I must argue that both city bus driver in Denver and Randy are equally ranked. What Randy clarified to me was how to pronounce what came after the acronym (Seton-Hill).

Thanks for that! I'll have to wean myself off of pee-com... I'm going to have a hard time letting that one go. Did they say the reason they preferred that?

I am not sure why they don't like pee-com. but before the interview I was advised not to say pee-com in front of the interview committee. They would rather hear you say the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine every time before pee-com.
So stick to pee-see-oh-em.

The PCOM admissions committee told me that they prefer it pronounced like "pee-see-oh-em"

This. Just about every administrator and faculty member here pronounces it pee-see-oh-em.

I don't think it matters, though. I referred to the school as pee-calm during interviews.

This thread is educational but at the same time it's also very funny lol

PCOM is pee cee oh em. Not pee cahm. Common misconception. Used to be pco

Maybe just say Puh-KAHM. Like the great southern nut, but with an M. Probably more effective if a dainty southern drawl is implemented.

I stick with pee-kahm for pcom, kay-kahm for kcom, aycomas for aacomas (this is how they themselves pronounced it when they came to my undergrad. So, only 3 syllables) I say all the letters for wvsom, then see-kahm for ccom, azz-kahm, western, nova or nsu, leee-kahm for lecom, msu, so-ma, rvu or Rocky vista, Pacific northwestern... whatever is the shortest way to say something and make someone understand what I'm talking about. Our admissions here say k.c.o.m. but 4 syllables is just twice the work. Not worth it.

The only one you need to worry about is not going to LECOM and saying a reddit-esk le-cahm and not Lee-Cahm

Yep that's how they pronounced it at orientation this week. The students still just say pee com

As per the DO in the practice I work for who graduated from NYIT-COM, its pronounced Nigh (like night, without the t-sound) Com (AKA NYCOM).

I made this mistake of reading this thread after a few beers. Can't stop laughing.

Also how does one use this emoji in a sentence: :flame:

I knew someone from Yakima and she told me that when they were naming PNWU, it was originally intended to be PNUHS. But since it's kinda sounds like "penis", they decided to go with PNWU lol. Idk how valid this story is though haha

Every time I see PNWU I see "Own You".
One of my old roommates' gamer tags was PWNU something or other.
