Anyone came from Sub 3.0 to >3.5?
Damn. Just feel so ashamed. Gonna work hard. Actually going to work hard- to say f you to this moment.
Just felt overwhelmed by the stupid C that I could've avoided so easily..
F this. I'm done screwing around...

Well what year are you? Coming back from a 3.0 in freshman year is easier than in senior year haha.

Yes.

My GPA after sophomore year was a 2.91.

I spent the next couple years with my nose to the grindstone and pulled nearly a 4.0 each semester. Graduated with a 3.56 cumulative GPA.

MCAT was a 33Q if I recall correctly.

Got into a half dozen medical schools. Graduated medical school magma cum laude (second in my class), scored >260 on Steps I and II, matched my top choice Dermatology residency, and am currently finishing my first year as an attending.

There are lots of SDNers who have done this, and have gotten into some really Top Schools.
Quit feeling sorry for yourself and do better in your next classes.

Why don't we like Penn State? (I say we because I just accept Goro opinions as facts. It hasn't steered my wrong yet, though admittedly there hasn't been a lot of time for it to.)

What's the deal with penn state?

"Their parent institution protected a child molestor for 20 years."
" But the UGrad school has nothing to do with the med school."
" I don't give a rats ass what you think! You see things differently as a parent ( he does have a point there, we don't what it's like to actually have children of your own and find out another school protected a cho. mo.)

I had a 2.2 freshman year. Got something around a 3.58 sophomore, 3.63 Junior, and 3.89 Senior. Still only got me to a 3.3, so you can see how having a really low GPA can be hard to raise. I got a straight 4.0 in postbac and 522 on MCAT. Just applying now (with c3.43) so I'll let you know in 12 months how it went.

So ... YES - you can raise your GPA. Don't beat yourself up. A good friend of mine got a C+ average his junior year and got into a great med school and great residency, so messing up even later in college can be overcome.

A family member of mine had an atrocious sophomore year, got his crap together, pulled straight 4.0's and got in med school

30 years ago my roommate flunked out with what was rumored to be the lowest gpa in the history of the premed program a 1.6 if I remember right. It took a loooong time but he graduated a neurosurgery residency.

I went from a 2.10 GPA freshman year to a 3.45 GPA senior year. I still have my super-senior year to go, so I might be able to push a 3.54. It is 100% possible to bounce back. Of course, I wish I never messed up that first year. The road is so much more difficult and agitating this way, but your hard work will pay off. In my case, insane planning and coordination also played a role in me not stepping on the white tile. Just do your absolute best from now on and LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES. Change your routine, work on time management, and remove distractions when necessary. Good luck, you got this 👍

You got ONE C, right? Your semester GPA isn't 2.0, is it? I'm thinking about your conditional acceptance agreements.

It's only going to be harder at UCLA or Cal, but you can do it! Figure out the issue and acquire better study habits now.

4.0 every semester and 33 MCAT? Dude, I'm so inspired.
Whoa, I ended this semester at 2.95. That's a huge come back, I feel so f' confident now.
Gonna favorite this page and look at it while I'm going down this Fall. I'm actually going to do it. I'm getting those A's.
Thanks very much 456789!

I'm going to get A's from now on. No joke. No Overwatch. No gaming. No screwing around. I'm actually done. Gonna seize next year!

Straight 4.0 pb and 522 on MCAT? Dude, are you serious? I'm so inspired reading this today. I put this off because my mental health wasn't just at it until today. I've been soul searching past 2-3 weeks. No sleep, just anxious and just felt miserable. Didn't sleep enough for past 5 days. Today, I'm starting new again!!
Thank you, I won't beat myself too hard haha!

Yeah, thanks Turkishking! I think you told me this before 🙂 haha

Damn, 1.6 to Neurosurgery? Long time, can you give me an approximate? I'm thinking about doing post-bacc or SMP 1 year after graduation. Going to spend next 3 years doing my fullest.

I took so much pain after grade reveal that I didn't sleep well for few days. But yeah, I'll make sure to do my absolute best and learn from my mistakes. I'm for real this time!

I didn't meet the agreement at first, but I appealed it and got it approved. I'm all good to go, they said! Yeah, a professor who taught (Physics) at UCs told me that there isn't much difference of rigors between my home school and at UCs he taught (various, he said), so if I just work hard he said I can get an A or B.

So pumped, I've spent last 5 days not getting enough sleep, being miserable and self-loathing. But I'm good to go man!
Thank you very much everyone!
I got this, I'm actually enjoying the process! It really doesn't matter if I fail now, because I can get to a higher place next semester!!!

I went from a 2.8 to a 3.6, you can do it!

Yo.. just wanted to say thank you everyone. I just came back here to read all of your replies and get pumped up for August 23rd when the semester begins.
I'll see new faces and new professors. However, this time, I won't be arrogant. I actually failed the final and blew the easy B (or could've been an A) last semester.
It was a learning experience and it made me humble. My friends call me humble all the time perhaps thanks to this experience 🙂

Alright, let's go! Thank you very much everyone 🙂

Yes I had 2.7 after my first year, then gradually raised it to 3.5 after 6 more years of UG. Had 3.95 in the last 3 full time years and got 98th percentile on my MCAT. Finally snagged one MD acceptance as an ORM international. Literally every other international student in my school had 3.9+ cGPA with 515+ MCAT. So yes you can still get in if your stats are below average, but you'll need lots and lots of hard work and time.

Read the book: "Blue Collar Blue Scrubs" by Michael J. Collins. It's one of my favorites and always motivates me. It's a (true) story of how Michael, the author, went from being a construction worker to a fantastic surgeon. Great read.

The founder of OldPreMeds, was asked to leave school after freshman year with a 0.67 (yes 0.67) average. He went on to different school where he graduated with honors in Neuroscience. He went onto medical school, residency and fellowship at Dartmouth and I believe now is medical director of 60 bed Critical Care Unit across three associated hospitals.

Like most applicants you are focusing on a single GPA number when in fact grade trends matter almost as much. A 3.5 student who is reality a 2.9 Freshman with three years worth of 3.8 is a 3.8 student and should apply to medical school as such

So if a student had a 2.1 (fresh), 3.8 (soph), 3.7 (junior), 4.0 (senior), and is now in their 5th year, during which they were taking more upper-level science classes and aiming for a similar GPA to their senior year.. are you saying that you would recommend they apply as if they had a >3.8 GPA, even though their projected cGPA at the end of the 5th year would be like a 3.55 and sGPA a 3.48?
