I have a related question. I used to play piano (quit in jr high), but recently started playing again. Is there a specific part of the application where I should write about it?

I find it amusing how important it is to have a gimmick to set yourself apart. It seems like it's more important than being a solid student with credentials that actually apply toward a career in medicine.

It's not either/or. You need both. What makes you so interesting that I should want to engage you in a one hour interview? Would I want you on my team and eating meals with me every day for six weeks? What would be talk about? People with a variety of interests are interesting. I have enjoyed talking with applicants about college sports, marching band, union organizing, the culture of northern Chile, and even the making of omlettes.

I'm glad someone more "official" can say exactly what I always thought.

I wrote my personal statement, and went into my interview, feeling that while it is important to get across why I want to go to medical school and why I am pursuing medicine, it is also to just let them get to know me as a PERSON and show them I am much more than just someone who did all these things to get ready for medicine.

Doctors are people to, and while it is important to accept students who will be good doctors, they also need to be good people.
