How to study for upper division science classes?

I was nailing my lower division classes, but upper division science electives this year have given me mixed results (mostly A-'s and a B or two).

How do you study for your upper division science classes? How are these classes different from your approach to lower division classes?

I'm a rote memorization kind of person... how do you study for "thinking"/ short answer type classes? What do you do? What works for you?

It all depends on the professor. Also talking to other students that have taken the professor/class before. (Do not rely on ratemyprofessor.com)
