How to withdraw/decline offer?

This is probably a stupid question, but what is the best way to decline an offer? Phone?? Email??

What do you say? Nobody seems to talk about "how" to officially decline a school (acceptance and/or waitlist)...

If its early you can send a snail mail letter (easiest because some require your signature).

Just send a simple letter along the lines of:

To Whom It May Concern:

After careful consideration I have decided to withdraw my application for the _____School of Medicine Class of 2012. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Your name here.


As it gets close to May 15th or after May 15th and you're making quick decisions - email is the way to go.

Also, if the school has an online applicant status page, sometimes there is a "withdraw" button. Or sometimes on the status page it directs you to send all correspondence via email. If not, the best bet is to go with snail.

Dear Institution,

The 2007-2008 application year resulted in my interviewing at many excellent medical schools. Unfortunately, there will be a limited number of institutions that I can attend. Based on a review of your credentials, I have determined that you will not be granted my enrollment. This decision indicates the highly competitive nature of the admissions committees who are recruiting me, and does not reflect upon your qualifications to teach medicine successfully.

I appreciate your interest in my application and hope your class is ultimately filled.

Hopefully everyone will be able to send a rejection letter to a school; although the school that you send it to probably wouldn't be one of the ones you want revenge on!

well actually they might offer you to go straight to residency with this letter😛
