I looked at some old threads on this topic and some said that a formal letter by snail mail is a good idea. Does anyone actually do that? Is an e-mail to the general admissions e-mail address good enough?

Email. They want to know ASAP.

Email will suffice...that's how I've withdrawn, and I haven't run into a problem yet.

I e-mailed for one and asked if it is necessary to follow up with a hard copy (they said no).

My second, I hand delivered myself (currently an undergrad). I don't recommend this as you will have to answer "why?"
