Should I apply to these schools? I'm hispanic (born in another country), therefore, an URM. However, since these are both historically black colleges, I don't want to waste money applying there if it would be better spent in other schools.

Is one of them more non-black URM friendly than the other? Also, I want to practice in underserved communities once I am a dentist and I volunteered 80+ hours in a clinic that served such a population.

Thanks for your feedback! 🙂

I am also Hispanic and applied to both. I interviewed at Meharry and never heard back from Howard. I would apply there if you are really interested in these schools. Yeah the majority of students there are African American but they do accept other URMs. As Hispanic I do think you will be considered if you can explain your goal of practicing in an uderserved community and don't make them feel like you are applying there be cause you consider them "safety schools."

As far as which one is more non-black URM friendly, I think Howard has a little more diversity but don't quote me on that.

Good luck!

Your professional goals combined with the fact that you are Hispanic should open all sorts of doors for you. If your stats are decent I get the feeling Meharry and Howard don't even need to be in the conversation. Suerte con todo.

Gracias a los dos! My stats are somewhat below average and I'm banking on my DAT which I take on the 24th. I do have 100+ hours of shadowing, 80+ hours in the clinic I spoke of above where I did chair-side assistance, and 40+ hours of non-dental related community service. I'm applying to 16 schools but I'm deciding whether to switch out Howard and Meharry for other schools...

I considered meharry and Howard in 2009 when I first applied to dental schools. Since I from Texas I applied to all three schools but I didn't get in. I decided to finish my bachelors degree in biology and apply this year but I thinking it's too late in the cycle to apply this year. Que debo de hacer?

It's only late if you still have to take your DAT, get letters of req, etc. If you don't have these ready, then I would say not to rush things and take this year to get everything together and apply next summer.

If you have everything ready I do think you are on time. You may not be considered an early applicant but at this point I personally don't think it's too late. It would be late if you submit AADSAS in Oct or November. Good luck!

With decent grades and a high DAT you shouldn't have to worry about applying to those schools, I actually got lots of interviews to alot of other schools i applied to and heard nothing from Meharry and Howard lol. So It all depends I guess. But yeah just apply to where you wanna go and with determination and a little bit of luck you should be able to get in.

There are 5 hispanics in my class out of 55. I would apply, and good luck

Are there any white folk? I have a strong desire to work in under-served populations the rest of my career, both domestically and internationally. Will this be taken into consideration?

3 males. Depends on how that desire is portrayed on your application. However, throwing terms such as "white folk" will be taken into consideration...just be a little more mature...you're trying to enter a professional world.

Hmm, being kind of serious for a discussion board. I am not sure who the term 'white folk' offends, but sorry to whomever that may be.

SACAPUNTAS- your immaturity comes off with any word you write.

That is because an anonymous discussion board affords the ability to not interact with everyone professionally. In my real world life I am quite the opposite and use the board to 'cut loose' more or less.

I think I need to move on to a different discussion board, too many stiffs here to actually be allowed normal conversation without being talked down to.
