nerd??? i think not. well i guess thats determined by your definition of a nerd. What makes you not a nerd? Do you play any division 1 sports because i played tennis my freshman and sophomore year for UCLA and turned down an offer when i was in high school to play ice-hockey for Boston College(another division 1 team). As well, in high school i made the Pa first-allstate team for ice-hockey,tennis my senior year.

I love how you attack me when you know nothing about me rather than debate. Back to the real topic I use logic and facts when i debate you make statements and accusations with no backing.

I am still waiting for thoses answers. I hope you don't bitch out because i am making you look like too much of an a$$

Apart from the name calling and childish antics, I respect your reliance on "logic and facts." I have a degree in philosophy with emphasis in critical analysis and logic, so I think I can say with some degree of certainty that after carefully looking over your original post I find no argument or supporting facts, just merely some unsupported assertions and informal fallacies. So much for logic! In philosopy there is a saying "logic is a *****, she'll sleep with anyone." I suppose you may be taken more seriously if you set aside your arrogant speech and begin to dialogue as a mature adult, not to mention a soon-to-be professional.

My facts
approx 1/3 blacks accepted 75/255*
approx 1/100 non blacks accepted 8/904*

My point: Race seems to play a mighty big part in who is accepted. I dont mind accepting people who by contract agree to serve in certain areas. By all means i do not have a problem with that as long as the areas are areas that certain all races would be able to live/work with out getting murdered due to discrimintation within that neighborhood. Maybe a better thing would be an agreement to work in an area where the average income is below a certain point not a specific area. As much as people claim that minorities are underrepresented in colleges i think this is totally rediculus. Colleges do not turn down certain people due to there ethnicity. The reason certain races are underrepresented in college is due to the fact that certain races are more "likely" to be impoverished and grow up in ****y family situtions. Social class is why many people can't get into/afford/think of college. When i was at UCLA the average black student had an SAT score 250 points below the non-black student(this was when it was 1600 I head this stat a few summers ago during a protest on campus). This is probably in part due to athletes, but the funny thing i noticed when i was out there was that alot of my minority friends where from weathy families and were not as "intelligent" as the non-minority students IN GENERAL not in all cases. but alot got admissions preference due to there skin tone i am guessing. The minority students who got the preference were the ones with parents who were weathly. The problem with this is the preference is going to the wrong group. I assure you, if you look at minorities whos parents make alot of monet these kids will not be underrepresented in college. I was very wealthy when i lived with my parents but i was placed in foster care when i was 15 due to stuff that my parents did and had NO MONEY what so and no way to get a job becasue i was not allowed to have a car and lived in the middle of no where and had to move every few months. If i had not gotten an athletic scholarship i would never had been able to go to college(certainly not due to lack of intelligence considering i finished HS 23 out of approx 500.) I met TONS of minority and non-minority kids during the 3 year that i was in foster care all of whom were DIRT poor and the only me and one black kid got into college both off of athletic scholarships. SOCIAL CLASS is underrepresented in colleges and is what should be evened out not race. the majority of the minorities that get the preferential treatment are the ones that DONT NEED IT any more than the average person.

*ACCORDING TO PAGE 19 in the 42nd edition of ADA's OFFICIAL GUIDE TO DENTAL SCHOOLS. For those of you who would like to verify my statemtns you must extract the the 904 by subtracting the African American applicats from the total 1159 total. 904 never directly appears on the page.

what high school did you graduate "23 out of approx 500" from? seeing that your grammar is horrible and you can't spell very well either... if i were you i would stick to your so called athletics.

this topic of alleged racism has been beaten to death many times. maybe its time this one be closed since there is nothing else useful to say.

You mentioned race playing a major role in the admissions office. So I ask: Does race play a significant role in Howard's admission process? Yes and no. I think minorities plays a significant role in the admissions process, whether it be black, blue, green or yellow or any other color you choose. It just so happens that blacks are one of the least represented minorities in the dental profession, so they take precedence in the selection process. Nevertheless, blacks are not the sole minority selected among Howard's applicant pool. Thus, I disagree that it is necesarily a race issue. It is a minority issue. But is isn't entirely a minority issue either. As I mentioned in a previous post Howard's stats for 2004, which are posted on its website, states that 75% of those admitted were minoritie(s). Out of a class of 83-85 students 75% is approximately 65 students or minorities (meaning blacks, hispanic, indian etc.,). The remaining percent is approximately 15-20 students who are of non-minority status. Thus, in contrast to some in-state dental schools who only accept a handful of out-of-staters, it stands to reasons that more non-minority students are admitted to Howard College of Dentistry, in terms of numbers, than many out-of-state students are admitted to some in-state schools. That's not bad for a supposedly "racist" school. The bottomline is this: If you are not a minority you can go ahead and apply and see what happens. You may be one of the 15-20 students selected or you may not. Many predental out-of-state students take chances that are far less likely when they apply to schools that gear their admissions to students that are in state.

Thats funny???? The stats that i listed were from the 42nd edition which was published with the stats from 2003-2004. And as far as the all minoritys get the preferane i think not. once again i will list the STATS from ADA's Guide to dental school 42 edition.

I'm not saying your stats are wrong but in 1 year it sure seems like there is a huge difference.

Out of 83
75 African American
1 Hispanic
0 Native Americans
3 Asians Americans
4 not listed(probably whites, but could be minorities from other countries being that they would not fit under the above becasue 3 of the 4 are followed by American so they could be potentialy black as well)

DOES THIS LOOK LIKE ALL MINORITES GET THE PREFERENCE OR JUST BLACKS?????? If we don't count Asians as an under rep minority which they normally aren't, then ther would only be ONE NON-BLACK MINORITY in that class.

And for the comment as to what high school i graduated from Neshaminy HS which is just north of Philadelphia. I could not give a **** if my postings on a forum are gramatically correct.

I would like to here what Mr.E has to say now that i once again clearly posted the stats. Do you still really think that all minorities get preference at Howard or just the blacks. It sure seems like from the stats that not to many non-black minorites are at howard.

I do believe i remember hearing that Howard was a "black" university??? i can't say i have ever heard it called a "Hispanic or NA university" but thats just what people say about, I doubt that there is any logic to those statements??

CBENNETT, your obviously pissed about something other than the high proportion of african americans going to howard or meharry. Why don't you turn the page and move on...

I admit that Howard is historically a black college (i.e. focuses attention on African-American students). I also admit, given the stats you posted, that more blacks were admitted than not. You have your stats and I have mine, interestingly, they are both for the same school year. How do we resolve this dilema? Let me ask you a question. Given the ADAs stats on the school and the schools own stats, which would you take as accurate? When Howard claims that 75% of its class for a given year were minorities, doesn't it follow that 25% of that same class is non-minorities? If the ADA stats are accurate for the 2004 class, it seems there is a huge discrepancy with that 25% margin, which from my calculation is more than just 4 students. Nevertheless, my argument has never been that Howard isn't a black college, this is common knowledge.

My argument is that it offers opportunities to historically underrepresented minorites, firstly black then others. These opportunities are comensurate with the applicant pool. If the applicant pool has more blacks than other minorities it will follows that more black will be asked to attend Howard and vice versa. Obviously, there are more black students applying to Howard than not, so I think it reflects more on the applicant pool than Howards insistence on looking only to color, so consequently, more black students are admitted.

Also, I never asked you where you attended HS.

I made a typo: it's not 75% minorities its 78%.

Anyone got the financial aid package from Howard yet? or any other information? I just got a call from them to confirm attendance and turning in the health forms. At this point I am 90% positive that I will attend Howard. Anybody still looking for housing? I am at California rightnow and will probably go check out apt at the end of this month. Anyone knows if you can apply for the towers without actually going to DC?

wow, according to this thread, we have 12 out of 80 (15%) people attending HU this year from SDN.

Yup, basically if you're dumb and black you have one foot in the door but if you're white or even dumb and white you have no shot...makes a ton of sense. I know someone who attends howard and they said if it wasn't for the huge curves, half of his class would have failed out already... 👎

I'm always amazed at how ignorant some people really are.... 😱

Pretty sweet that so many of us are going. Anyone else receive the packet today? I'm so stoked! 👍

Did any of you interview @ Howard on April 29th? I wonder if anyone from that group got accepted.....?

You can call and request an app for the towers. I heard they fill up fast though.

Hey there,
I'm also in the c/o 2010 and am from Dallas, TX. I just moved to DC and while it's quite a change, I'm excited about starting school. I got my packet today and was thrilled. Looking forward to chattin' with all you Longhorns/Aggies on here before classes start.

I actually live in Pentagon city - in Arlington. It's an amazing location...problem is you have to have a car or be willing to take the metro to school every day if you don't get a parking spot. The metro is 1 minute away, then you'd go to the Howard/Shaw metro stop and take the Howard student shuttle bus to campus. I couldn't find an affordable place in DC that was in a good neighborhood. You can also look for places in Crystal city. Let me know if you need any more info.

Is there anyone looking for housing still? tower east is full right now and I am looking for some shared solution to minimize my rental expense. please PM me or post if you don't have a place finalized yet.

just an update to the list, i guess i will put myself on the official list as well, 14 out of 80 now

Does anybody in here know a safe place to stay in DC that is a walking distance from Howard? I am from Houston, TX. I probably move to DC in 8-7-06 to look for a place to stay. Oh, I got my financial aid packet a couple ago but no reward letter.

Thanks,
Andy

You might need to call financial aid because it should have come with the award letter. There were so many pages, maybe they just forgot - or maybe there's a problem that you should clear up asap.

Hey guys...I'm planning on applying to Howard in 2007 and was wondering if they accept community college credits... pls let me know.. thanks!!

I am still looking for housing in DC. I plan to get there on the 10th and look for a place to stay. I don 't have a car so I will try to look for places close to school. Anybody in here have a place and looking for someone to share?

Well - orientation is quicly approaching and I was just wondering how dressed up ya'll are going to be for the first week. I know that we'll be meeting faculty and administrators and taking our class photo so I was just going to see if everyone was going to be in slacks or jeans, skirts or suits. I'd appreciate your feedback. Thanks guys. See you soon!
