Hi everyone,

Had a few questions regarding AF and Family Medicine -- had a long conversation with a girl from my flight at COT who is at USU and she told me that almost 2x the number of people applied for family medicine this year than were spots available. Plus, it seems a good deal of USU wants family in 2014 as well. My questions are:

  • Has anyone else heard this statistic? Did they only defer the 10 spots that were originally alotted in the HPERB?
  • What can I do now (halfway through MS3) to make myself any more appealing to the JSGME? I have 2-3 locations that are more appealing to me, personally (family nearby, lived there previously) and hope to have the best possible chance to match there.
  • When on rotations, are there things that I can do to stand out (in a positive light) that aren't necessarily apparent to people who have only done civilian rotations?
  • Who gets deferments? I've heard that some specialties defer the people they really want so they stay happier w/ the military, while some specialties defer the people they don't want so they don't have to put up with them for the next 3 years.

Basically, I wasn't worried about matching at 6pm, and now, closer to 8pm, I'm hella worried -- both because of the sheer #s and the number of USU kids interested (I understand they get preference over HPSP, right?). Any advice on how to best navigate this JSGME business would be greatly appreciated.

Im also AFHPSP aplying for FM this year. I heard 75 applicants for 40 spots for the 2012 match, up from 64 in 2011 with 13 deferments.

Which programs are you auditioning at?

I had no idea FM was so competitive in the AF. I always thought it would be similar to the civilian side of things. Out of curiosity what are the non-competitive specialties in the AF these days, if there is such a thing?

Right now, I'm looking hard at Travis, Nellis, and Belvoir. At school on the west coast, but my spouse is from the southeast and really wants to return there after medical school. My USU friend said that Travis and Belvoir were the most popular locations so it makes me a bit nervous. :scared::scared:

I know we have to apply civilian, but I think I'd prefer to go to UVA or NOVA for residency if my family ends up in DC and I don't get Belvoir. Guess I'm trying to figure out if civ deferment is a viable option or if ranking it is just a waste of a space.

I hear Belvoir is the toughest to land because of location and the fact that they only have 4 AF spots (though this year the Army didnt have enough FM applicants and AF got 5 Belvoir spots).

Travis and Eglin are popular based on location but have a lot of spots.

Im doing my ADTs at Eglin (used to live there, in-laws are there, spent time there as a premed and loved the faculty and residents, not excited about the patient population though or living in FL again) and Travis (some of my family there, ive heard great things about the training, and love the location)

Offut is also high on my interest list but I only have the 2 ADTs. I want get out there at some point and see it though.

An upperclassmen got a civilian def this year even though it was ranked very low on her list. Based on that I would say you prob have a good chance of getting it if you rank it high and we have similar numbers this year for FM.

Does anyone know how difficult it is to get Belvoir for Army? Was not filling all 6 Army spots this year something new?
