I am a first year dental student on the naval HPSP. I am finishing up my finals next week and am looking forward to the Two months off my d school gives us off. I applied for ODS this summer but was wait-listed. Since then, I now prefer the idea of completing ODS after I graduate. In addition to studying for my board exams, I hope to spend some of my summer visiting family abroad...

What is the protocol for traveling during the summer? Should I contact my recruiter to let them know? (I already traveled abroad for spring break and ran into no issues.) How long do you think I can travel abroad for?

Thanks in advance for your time!

This is how it is for the Air Force, which I imagine is the same for Navy:

As long as it's not in your 45 day ADT window you can go anywhere. If you travel outside the US, email the Navy your itinerary with contact info so they'll know where you are and when.

If it is in your 45 day window, you can only travel inside the US.

As far as I understand, your recruiter doesn't really have anything to do with it at this point.

Just make a google voice account and give them that phone number. You'll get the voicemails to your email and you can call them from anywhere.

If you are traveling abroad they may ask if you have completed some of the training requirements that everyone has to do, they are called GMTs. There are two or three specifically made for traveling. If you have a CAC card and NKO access then whoever you contact it, though definitely not your recruiter, will want you to do them and print out the certificates. They take about 30 minutes total for all three.

But if no one mentioned them, don't bring them up. They are tedious and a waste of time.
