Hey guys, I need your help in deciding between these two schools. I received the HPSP and the tuition and living expenses are fully covered wherever I go.

School 1: NYU
Pros:
  • Well known school
  • Huge/diverse patient pool
  • City life
  • Good clinical experience
Cons:
  • Strict academic policy (Failing a course may result in repeating an entire year)
  • Student to faculty ratio
School 2: UT Health SA

Pros:
  • Great academic/clinical program. Integrated basic sciences curriculum to help students better prepare for the integrated national board
  • Prior military service professors who can provide insight into military dentistry
  • Brand new clinic
Cons:
  • Not much to do in SA
  • Old classrooms (classrooms and clinic are in two separate buildings)

I'm already in the Army and I have 4 years to fulfill anyways. HPSP overrides the current contract and I can finish it up after dental school. Plus that 4 years of active duty will get me really fast hands in dentistry. But I definitely agree with you guys, if I was not in the Army. What would be your suggestion based on this? I appreciate your feedback! @AppalachianDentalBoy @giannis @macsak

hpsp or not, choose UT

Where do you plan to practice? I think NYU/New York requires general dentists to do a general dentist residency to practice in NY. TX does the WREB, which lets you practice in many states. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong!) Even if you do HPSP, SA is close to a military base and UTHSCSA has a lot of military faculty so you'll probably meet a lot of people in person that could give you insight on what military dentistry is like.

(but honestly... UTHSCSA > NYU lol)

You can buy a nice three bedroom two bathroom home in San Antonio in a good neighborhood next to the school for really cheap. If I were you I’d do that and put my stipend towards it monthly instead of rent. Maybe get some room mates and help pay it off even faster. There was a thread on SDN asking students what their school’s clinic requirements were. UT was higher than NYU for sure.
