I am currently on HPSP scholarship and this summer I attended ODS (Officer Development School) and would be happy to answer any questions that anyone might have about the scholarship or the training experience.

Glad we have an expert on the subject on the forum.

I am far from an expert but am willing to share my personal experience and be as helpful as possible.

I read the FAQ section on payback but it was a bit confusing. How exactly does it work for example...

4 years med school + 1 year internship + 3 years military residency what do I owe when I graduate residency. If you are not interested in retiring in the military is it worth doing it. I am basically do it for money during med school (have a family) and loan repayment.

Assuming you did a 4 year scholarship, you would owe 4 years.

Does ODS take place at a certain time for every new HPSP recruit, or is there a few different start dates that one is randomly assigned, or chooses? What branch of medicine (primary, surgery, psych) are you planning on going into, and did that play a role in your decision to do HPSP?

Edit: Sorry OP, didn't pay attention to the fact that you're dental.. 🙂

Few different start dates with limited slots. You can request, but there have to be slots.

So, after doing some research last night, I'm still a little confused about how the whole residency match works for HPSP students.

My primary concerns are:

1) Will we be pressured into a field of medicine that we might not see ourselves in (IM/FP)
- While one of the reasons why I am interested in doing the HPSP is so I will have the option to do FP or IM without having to worry about gobs of debt, I don't want to be pressured into those fields either.

2) How does the residency match work?

3) Does anyone feel like HPSP has made their rotations more difficult? It appears like it can be very difficult to get rotations you are interested in.

4) Are there specific age requirements/limitations (I'm a non-trad [32], but feel that I'm in pretty good shape)

5) What kind of more adrenalin seeking fields are available for HPSP students/residents and attendings? I saw a diving doc, flight doc, helicopter doc, etc.. What are those fields and what would the physicians be doing (sorry if I didn't get the names correct)?

6) Are the hours for residency practice much different than civilian medicine, barring cushy fields?

I have quite a few more questions, but I'll save them and try to do some more research in the meantime.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
