I am an incoming med student applying to the HPSP scholarship. My recruiter has told me not to worry about my credit history. However, I am reading everywhere that a credit check will be performed. I was in a bad place in life and had accumulated 10k in collections from 6 years ago. These are not resolved. My recruiter says a credit history check won’t be performed for HPSP applicants. However, I’m reading elsewhere there have been students that lost their HPSP scholarship due to the inability to pass secret level clearance. I am worried that I could be in my first or second year of school and lost my scholarship because of this. I would like to join the Army or Air Force. However, I’m beginning to wonder if it would just be safer for me to have a co-signer (family).

Losing the ability to do HPSP would be the best thing to ever happen to you. Also, there is no way this will happen. Enlisted have terrible credit and deploy locations that require secret all the time. I don't foresee this happening, but could you maybe consider funding your medical school with the VA scholarship thing or EDRP or ANYTHING else? I'd go that route. Consider losing HPSP a blessing.

I appreciate you reaching back out. I have too much adverse credit history to get federal loans. I could however try VA.

Dude, seriously?
Yes seriously, I lost my job many years ago and went homeless. I was unable to my vehicle or apartment and my vehicle was repossessed and I was without a home or job. Currently I am broke as a student so still unable to pay those debts. So, I don’t really have many options besides potentially getting a co-signer or some form of HPSP scholarship. So, yes seriously…
