Happy New Year. I'm new here. (see what I did there?) :D

:D Welcome to the noble land of hSDN, Dudeofswim!

And Happy New Year to everyone! Anyone make any New Years resolutions/goals?

Hi!

I have been a guest on the site for awhile, and recently joined.
Quick facts about me, I am attending college this fall, I am 17, and live in the midwest. (SD).

My New Years Resolution is to continue to use may and can correctly.

Also, a quick side note, if anyone needs a laugh go to the Pre-Med Allopathic forum and look at the 'what makes a competative applicant thread' I don't know if you have read any of varsityblue's posts but. . . . wow.

Back off, pre-frosh. Looks like you could use a crash course in both SAT Verbal and grammar before matriculating...

. . . Why are you lashing out at me? This isn't the SAT exam, although I appreciate the help proof-reading my posts. You are like a more annoying version of the paper clip on Microsoft Word.
Also, why go all grammar nazi on a lowly 'pre-frosh'? How insecure are you?
I pity you, and can't think of a reason why you would pick fights with random students on this site.

I suppose I should stop feeding the troll. Good Night.

Actually, you're the troll here and you should mind your own business. That said, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of E. B. White's The Elements of Style.

Did I miss something? Why do we have a pre-med and a high school kid arguing with each other over spelling? Awkward.

Well, I introduced myself, and mentioned a thread where varsityblue was in a lovely battle with some other members. I found out about said war from the 'accepted class of 2016' thread. As funny as they found it, I thought hSDN would like to know about it. Then, varsityblue responded to my post, and the rest is history.
And it is awkward, but, as I have no problem with varsity blue, I don't know why she popped in to read my post.

Looks like someone could use a crash course in drawing the line between joking banter and just being a jerk. Where do you get off, following this new guy? For a college student, you are pretty childish and petty to pick on some "lowly pre-frosh". Just my two cents.

Welcome to SDN, new guy. =D

..... :wtf:

Anyway... My new year was good, I had to go over to the barn I work at for a couple of hours on New Years Eve to clean stalls/feed horses/etc, then I just went home and hung with the family for the rest of the evening. I know, I'm such a party animal. :D How about you/everyone else?

My New Year's was interesting, I went to a friend's house and we played card games with a few other people. I'm apparently a card shark, since I was faking people out in BS. XD

Wow, you play BS too! My family went to a big Court Whist/New Years party, and it was glorious fun.

Also, I shadowed a GI Doctor again this weekend, and watched an EGD/Colonoscopy procedure. Easily the most interesting thing I have seen in the hospital thus far.

A fellow BS player! If only there was a way to play cards over the internet. x)

Do you think GI is the specialty you want? If not, that's okay, we got at least six years before we have to do clinical rotations and pick and choose. I don't know what specialty I want yet.

Have any of you played Egyptian Rat Race before? One of my favorite card games. :D

GI stuff is pretty cool. I haven't shadowed for a little while, due in large part to my car not wanting to start at the moment. I'm working on some opportunities for the summer though. :xf:

Never played Egyptian Rat Race, but I have played more than my fair share of Poker, Baseball, Texas Hold 'em, Rummy, Gin, Gin Rummy, and Pig Casino.

My grandma taught me how to play Poker and Texas Hold 'em. xD

Honestly, it was a specialty I had never considered. Although after watching her (the doctor) chatting with the CRNA, whilst expertly removing samples of the patients stomach and later polyps from his colon, I have to say, seems like it would be fun. A super nice RN also narrated the procedure, and explained how to navigate the colon. Also a brief lecture on the cons of dropping a $30,000 scope.

That sounds awesome! I'd love to go shadow, but I'm stuck with waiting until I can get a car and obtain a permit. (Honestly, I'd be able to get my license right now if we didn't move so much. I'm 17 and I'm just going to try to test for my permit.)

How do you play Egyptian Rat Race?

I will say, when my family moved away from California to South Dakota (I was 7) my father consoled my sister and I with 'At least you can drive at 14' We never complained again. :)
I hope you can acquire a car soon!

Aw, thanks. I hope so too. How do you like South Dakota? By far, my favorite state to live in was Kentucky. I'm in North Carolina now, which has its pluses, but some of the people here dislike me from being originally from Massachusetts.

>Egyptian Rat Race!< It's a wonderfully addicting little game that, due to the slapping component involved, can end up hilariously violent. :D

South Dakota is awesome! One of my best friends moved out there when we were 12. I took a trip out there to visit her a couple summers ago and I loved it. We're in the process of arranging another trip for this summer, I'm prettttty psyched.

I have to admit, South Dakota is fun. Lots of really beautiful state/national parks. People are nice, and there are a lot of resources for people interested in health care. Few super pre-med gunner types, for which I am becoming more and more thankful. in the back of my mind Egyptian Rat Race sounds familiar. . . can't think of why.

I'm glad that you all like it there.

I've played Spit, which is sort of like that. It was a weird but fun game but I couldn't tell you the rules if my life depended on it. How are you guys? The end of the first semester is coming up fast for me.

I agree, the semester is going by quickly. . .

I am filling out the FAFSA and finishing up some scholarship applications. . . I find it really awkward writing a PS/Essay. I am fighting to keep the douche factor down.

The end is starting to come up on me too. We have finals during the MLK week. After that, we only have one more set of classes before I'm done. Have to work on financial aid and make a final choice on my college (already looks like SMCVT, but going to go through them all to make sure). All of the stuff about medicine having issues is a bit depressing, but I'm staying positive and hoping it all gets fixed before I get up there. Other than that, I'm doing pretty good. Hope everyone else is doing good.

I have to file my tax forms for working in time for FAFSA (ugh).

We had finals before break. This is our last week of the first semester. You know, I never really believed those who said that your senior year flies by, but considering we are already ~halfway through, I am convinced! I hope the second half goes by just as quickly... I don't know about you guys, but I am so ready to graduate and move on to college.

Wow, one semester to go.

I agree about wanting it to fly by. . . college is glinting in the distance, and senioritis is setting in more by the second.

I echo your sentiments, AntiHouse. FAFSA. Tax Records. Ugh.

Yeah. At this point, I'm using my high school classes to try out new note-taking methods and study techniques for college. I'm still trying to get good grades, but it isn't as big of an issue for me. You're right that senior year is rushing by. I can't believe we're already near the halfway mark. I just have to worry about two classes next semester that are required for graduation, but they're somewhat easy.

Yeah. At this point, I'm using my high school classes to try out new note-taking methods and study techniques for college.

That's a good idea. I might steal that approach. :D

By the way, does anybody know anything about timed essay scholarship competitions? I've got one coming up in a few weeks for one of the schools I applied to... It's for a possible full ride. I'm a little nervous. :scared:

Sorry. The only scholarship that has a timed portion at my school is the AFL-CIO scholarship. Basically, you take a test about labor unions, and you get a scholarship if you score high enough. Needless to say, I decided not to apply.

Ha. Yeah, I would probably pass on that one as well. And no worries, I still have a few weeks to dig up whatever info I can find on the matter. :xf:

In other news, I found out I got into my state flagship school's honors program! While this school isn't my first choice, it's good to have good options to fall back on I suppose.

Now... 2 more essays to write: one for another honors program, and another regular app essay, and then I am a free woman! Well, from college apps anyway. Fastweb and I will soon become very close friends, haha.

Congrats on the honors program, and good luck with the scholarships! Just out of curiosity, who is your top choice? If I missed it in earlier posts, I apologize.

Personally, I'm trying to find some through my work with the local access channel and newspaper. My school scholarships are really obscure (requires a ten-part application process, applies only for random people, etc.), so I have my work cut out for me. Fortunately, my top choice gave me a decent amount of FinAid, so it isn't as pressing as it could have been.

On another note, I decided to hold off on focusing on medicine and career-related things until I get to college. I'm starting to get too caught up with all of the doomsday news about reimbursement and everything like that, so I'm taking some time off in that sense so I can stop worrying for awhile. Will look back when I get to college and see how things play out.

Besides, AP Chemistry and Honors Calculus will be hard enough. :D

I agree with you with the 'AP Chemistry will be hard enough' sentiment. We can't really worry about what the field is like now because it probably won't be that way when we get into it 11-14 years from now (4 years of undergrad, 4 years of medical school, and 3-6 years of residency).

That's what I'm trying to tell myself when it comes to pharmacy. XD

Thank you muchly! I'm going to withhold the name out of internet paranoia , but my top choice is a little private school about 2 hours from where I live. They have a fantastic zoology program with lots of hands-on animal experience and great undergrad research opportunities. Basically heaven for a pre-vet such as myself. :D When I visited last July I pretty much fell in love with it.

Blah. I don't miss calculus. Good luck with it! I took it during winter quarter at a local CC last year. Take everything you are learning throughout the year and cram it into ~10 weeks, and that was my experience with calc 1. It was worth it though, got both college and high school credit, so I'll never have to take it again! Any other post-secondary people out there?

Failed a calc test today. Maybe that'll cure my severe senioritis.

Will that calc test wreck your grade, or are you still set?

BTW, had my wisdom teeth removed yesterday, and there are better ways to spend a weekend.

Oh yeah, my grade is screwed for a while, but I'll get it back up to a B. I just do not have any drive to do anything in my high school classes at the moment.

And sorry about the wisdom teeth, I got mine taken out 2 years ago and it sucked.

Pre-Calculus was the bane of my existence when I had it junior year, which is why I'm not taking Calculus but AP Statistics instead. Best of luck, Gamma.

Speaking of, are you all in a block schedule or traditional? I've been in both, but I love block scheduling so much. Traditional drove me crazy.

Had a different type of oral surgery, but sucked all the same. Just don't eat anything hard for the first few weeks. I ate a hard chip, and I ended up with random bleeds for well over a month. Haven't had wisdom teeth yet, though. Hopefully I have enough room in my mouth to avoid it!

Not a big fan of pre-calculus, especially trig. Starting to find my math stride, though, and hopefully I can have a strong showing in honors calculus.

Conflagration, 4-block schedule. Change classes at half-year mark.

Block. Except calc is a three term class, so it feels like trad

Three term? How odd. I remember in middle school our sixth grade electives were only a quarter long, but I've never heard of that before.

Block scheduling for the win, I would jump out a window if I still had traditional. xD

Yeah traditional sucks and it takes block scheduling to realize it. I think that it's a three term class because the the last term is solely meant for the purpose of studying for the AP test. I've heard that a lot of people get 5s because of this so maybe it's a good thing.

I am no pre-calc fan, and it makes me worry about a Chemistry major, as I would have take calculus 1, 2, and differential equations.

I think I was speaking too much after the surgery, as I was getting random bleeds too. So I am being as quiet as possible, and hoping my swelling will go down.

Oh, and vicodin rules.

Hooray for Vicodin! I have to get my wisdom teeth out this year... not excited.

I can't believe college is right around the corner. It's insane. xD

It's not getting here quick enough if you ask me.

+1000

Went on a dorm tour, and delivered some tax records to financial aid office. I want college now. Have you guys applied for a lot of scholarships? Is your new screen name a scrubs reference? :)

It's not getting here quick enough if you ask me.

Agreed. So ready to move on.

One of the main things that kept me from senioritis thus far was the fact that my transcript was going out to colleges and it needed to stay squeaky clean. Now that transcripts are out it's tempting to slack off at times, but my good-student tendencies are too deeply engrained at this point to do so without feeling extremely guilty. :p
