Hi guys-
So, i am entering 3rd year at U of I and am already thinking about externships for 4th year. I am interested in feline and shelter medicine specifically. I have heard about an externship through the Humane Alliance in North Carolina, and it sounds pretty great. I will definitely have the opportunity to do some shelter med extern rotations where I currently live (Urbana/Chicago, Illinois), but I'm wondering if the additional externship there would give me better experience for finding a job when I'm done with school.
Has anyone done this externship-and if so-can you tell me what you thought of it? was it worthwhile?

thanks!

All I know is my friend tried to get it for winter 2013 and they were all booked up - so hurry! 🙂

Apply real early if you want to go! I'll be there the first 2 weeks of January. I didn't have enough flexibility in my schedule though to do the 3rd week there.

I have one classmate that did an externship there a couple months back and was very happy with the experience and the training.

thanks guys-when you say apply early-how early do you think? i'm just now entering 3rd year-so i wont be starting my rotations until April-so, before January you think, or is after ok? or even as early as this Fall?!?

I would call them now and see how far out they are booked... I know it's more than 6 months in advance.

Bunnity-thanks! I just sent them an email.

It looked like a good program. There is a catch that you need to repay your time with them by volunteering/leading a weeklong? program for them within a year of doing the program. So I wasn't able to do the program as I knew I wanted to do an internship and couldn't hold up that commitment. So read the fine print! I don't know how strict there are on that rule...

I don't think the volunteering has to be with them -- just with a non-profit. I could be wrong though!

I have lots of classmates who have gone down there, and all have loved it! Asheville is gorgeous!

I was under the same impression as Angelo84 that it had to be with a humane alliance associated shelter. Even better if it doesn't have to be, but I worked with one locally before vet school that I'd love to go back and help out, so it wasn't a bit issue for me.

yes-i saw that disclaimer for volunteer work and it does sound like it would be at any humane alliance trained shelter. that is allright for me since i want to volunteer even after vet school anyway.

But-I'm IN! i just got a 2-week long externship there in December of 2013!
