My bio professor told me that it has something to do with sleep cycle and Kaplan BB says circadian rhythms -physiological cycles lasting 24 hours.

so isn't sleep cycle = circadian rhythms?

There was a problem saying which one controlls circadian rhyms and answer choices were pineal gland and hyphthalamus. The answer is pineal gland due to melatonin secretion.
The answer key says hypothalamus controls sleep cycle but answer was still melatonin.

Anything sleep cycle related is going to be from the pineal gland. Hypothalamus regulates primal drives such as hunger, thirst, etc. It may contribute slightly to sleep cycle regulation but that's always going to be the buzz-word for the pineal gland.
