I ACTUALLY GOT an INTERIVEW?!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Great news Matt! Hope all goes well. 🙂

first off...thanks again for the well-wishes.
secondly, "woot-woot for 11/11 babies!"
thirdly, I do plan on applying broadly next cycle anyways, cause I am sure I will have a whole new application at that point.
as far as advice on what questions to look out for in an interview though--i have just heard that it is fairly relaxed but nothing more than that...ill keep browsing for this topic in the forums unless you can help me out.

Congrats, I was hoping to see your massive improvement on your MCAT but you might not have to retake it overall...here's hoping

oh no--i AM retaking the MCAT, regardless if I am accepted this year or not. It is a matter of placating my ego at this point.
I have to prove to myself that I can do just as well on that exam as I have done in my regular coursework...
:: determined ::

You're a triathlete all right. The more pain you can inflict on yourself, the better.

Matt are you still planning on applying Carib like it says on you MD apps

hey congrats on the interview.
but why carib?

i actually havent sent out any applications for the Carib...although I do have them filled out and ready to go.

I don't have anything against the Carib, in fact--I think I would enjoy studying medicine out there.
the downfall is that I dont think id be proud to tell people which med school i graduated from...and from what i hear, landing a good residency can be tricky.

I figure the best thing to do is simply reapply next cycle and if I still dont get any love from schools, then I will send out apps to the carib.

Oh I absolutely have nothing against Carib medical schools.
My question had a confused inquisitive implication to your application to osteopathic medical school and Carib medical school (allopathic). Wouldn't that be a conflict of philosophy? Do you have a preference or just want to be a doctor?

At the ER where I work, there are tons of DO's, working alongside tons of MD's. There are never any conflicts of philosophy there. Its all the same ****, with a few exceptions.

I don't think there is a substantial difference between the two medical philosophies.
So, as much as i am interested in learning OMM, it will not be tremendously upsetting to study under the allopathic model. I figure that if you want to practice holistically, you will find a way to do so.

It is kind of like a nature vs nurture argument here.
Where: nature = med student
and nurture = type of med school (allo/osteo)

And as I have understood this argument, we are not simply the product of one of these factors, but rather--a combined blend of both factors.

If I get a decent MCAT (~30) this upcoming May 27th, I wont make any bones about it, I am going to apply to:
1) all California (MD & DO) --> state resident
2) University of Hawaii (MD) --> own land here
3) all Florida (MD & DO) --> went to college here
4) all Arizona (MD & DO) --> just a nice place I'd like to be
5) various safety schools (MD & DO)

You own land in Hawaii?

i havent been on it yet...but i believe its about 1.5 acres on the Big Island

aloha

😀

Wow nice! If you build a house on it will you invite all of us? 😉

My husband said, if you build it they will come. 🙂

Oh no, I am well aware of that. I was just curious as to your reasons. I thought you had a specific desire to go into osteopathic medicine that I became confused when I saw you had plans on applying MD. That's all.

Good luck on your MCAT!

MOST DEFINITELY hoping to get accepted this year.
BUT, im not gonna hold my breath waiting for it to happen. In truth, I will give it 100% effort...I just don't think that is good enough at this point in the cycle considering my stats.
Which is why you might see me allude (quite often) to next cycle.
in a semi-related news item: one of my professors that wrote me a LOR just ran into me on friday and suggested I consider reapplying for a combined MD/PhD program...if anything, it is a beautiful stroke of the ol' ego to hear that!

Congrats on the interview; you have a great resume and I'm sure you'll kill it. I've thought about re-taking the MCAT for the purpose of ego placation as well (have an 8 on PS section), though I may be just sane enough not to do this. I'd trade my manhood for your GPA, and surely on the right day with good prep your MCAT will rocket up. 👍

Hey dude, congrats on your interview invite. I hope you get in!! Are you going to go if you do?

marathondude--
you can run a 2:22 marathon?!?!
vurry niicee!
that's faster than Lance Armstrong btw.

and to address the last question, "will i go if i get in" -- well, in all likelihood, i wont be attending the school this upcoming fall. Best case scenario is that I am accepted for the class of '09.
and like i said earlier, i am still going to reapply this summer even if i am already accepted at PNWU.
...its always good to have options!

2:22 is freaky. What's the world record? Like 2:05 or something?

as many of you are aware...this will be my first interview i have ever done for a med school.

i have been reading about how the first interview is usually the toughest.
i dont want to make it as such for myself.
I already found some potential questions that may be asked by browsing around SDN. So i think that will loosen my nerves a bit.
But I cant seem to calm down and behave normally as of late. There is so much nervous energy about this 30 minute time frame having the power to determine so much of my future.
its kinda trippy really.
So here is my question: being that many of you have been on multiply interviews, what are some things you wish you would have known, done, or said, for your 1st interview?

If I'd known that the interview wasn't going to be all that bad, then I wouldn't have been as nervous in the first place.

Simple as that.

I wish that I had known that I was going to be walking all over and had bought more comfortable shoes. My heels were bleeding by the time I got to my interview. 🙂

Hey Matt. First off, everyone will probably tell you this but don't get stressed out about the interview. I was plenty stressed at my first interview, however, there was no need to be. If it is a closed-file, make sure to tell them everything you can about yourself that makes you a great choice for their school. If it is open-file, make sure to reiterate your strong points, as well as tell them anything else you failed to mention in your applications. Even though SDN may have a lot of questions posted, don't expect to hear any or all of the questions you've read; it seems like some of the interviewers like to throw curveballs, and just be honest in your answers. If you feel like you did crappy on the interview, don't panic; myself and a bunch of people I know had the same feelings coming out of several interviews, only to find out that were accepted in the next few weeks. Also, don't only ask the interviewers questions about the school, ask them about their backgrouds as well, like why they chose DO or chose to teach at a DO institution. It seemed to me that they loved it when people would talk to them about their history; it makes it more personal and makes you more memorable. Lastly, enjoy the interview day; it may be nerve-racking, but it's definately going to be memorable and I'm sure your going to do great. Best of luck to you!

so...now im a lot more settled down...but--
im having issues with this dressing up thing... (see picture)

i have to learn this monstrosity before i go to sleep tonight!
i dont get it. i can give you the most detailed explanation for some physiologic reactions...but i cant tie my own tie?!
i have no shame.

I'm not excited about that tie. You're hot enough to wear a red tie. (Personal opinion: disregard if it causes stress.)

OMG! is that really you? Honey, your tie is waaaay too short! You look cute though! 😉 The bottom of your tie should hit just above the waist of your pants. I agree with midlife, go for a bold color for the tie . . . you're cute enough to pull it off. Good Luck :luck:

The length is fine, he just needs to tie it right.

Worst case, find an older lady with a wedding ring and ask her for help, either at your hotel or at the school. She'll be tickled pink and it'll make her day. And you'll be all fixed up.

Yeah it's just tied wrong otherwise it would probably be a good length. I agree to go with a different color depending on what color your suit is.

you guys are too flattering =]

anyhoo, i think i learned how to do the tying of the ties now.

so i dressed up and got all pretty again. I actually have TWO ties.
here is that first one no one liked:

I like this one more. 👍 Nice job tying it . . . looks much better now. 😉

I like the second one better, but your cute for either so it doesn't matter.

Good Luck

Good luck with your interview!!! It would be awesome to have you as a classmate this year!:luck:

Good luck Matt and let us know how it goes!!!!

good luck man, dominate this thing

So, Matt good job at gettin all the ladies on here to love you off. its well known that ppl born on nov. 11th are fabulously cute, i should know hahahha.

now just bring that charm to the interview, hope you have a mainly female panel, and be brilliant. also, one thing i messed up with at my first interview was i said to my two-female panel, "nice meeting you guys" at the end of the interview. 🙄 sweet move, yes i think so. and yes, i got waitlisted. lol

understand who ur talking to, but have a bit of humour. i think AZCOM loved me cuz i stood out (being canadian makes u easy to remember) and really had a "conversation" with them throughout the interview. look them in the eye (think 7th grade speeches.....americans do that right?) and note their body language. one woman kept nodding at things i was saying, so i knew i was saying something she wanted to hear. if she frowned at something, i tried to further explain my point so i didnt "leave a bad taste in her mouth".
hope that helps. and seriously, just enjoy it. i had a way better time at my other 2 interviews and got accepted to both. ur happy, they'll be able to tell.

Oglesby, I'm really sorry about this snow, and I really hope you're not driving over the pass. At this point it's worth it to get a connection out of the Yakima airport.

i never drove my own vehicle in Yakima.
I got a connecting flight in Seattle from Yakima.
Well--thats what I had planned anyhow. The weather was pretty bad and my flight out of Yakima was late so I missed my connecting flight in Seattle.
I ran around like crazy for a while and then I talked to customer service and they placed me in a hotel for that evening.
I woke up at 4am the next morning and prepared for my flight to Phoenix AZ.
ONCE AGAIN--the flight was delayed due to an oil leakage at the Seattle Airport! So I missed my connecting flight in Phoenix as well!
I sat around the Phoenix airport for about four hours and then finally jumped on a plane to San Francisco late in the afternoon.
It was a LOOONG TWO days of travel.

-I just have the best of luck when flying =/

How did the interview go?

I honestly dont think the interview could have went any better!
I spoke confidently, maturely and offered unique insight into matters asked in the questions. I dont think i could have performed any better even if i had known the questions in advance!
As soon as i finished the interview--I felt like I got an acceptance 😀
It'll be interesting to see if I get a call tomorrow. thats when we all find out if we have been accepted for Fall '09
But--I am left with a VERY good feeling in my heart about this one. I am very amazed at how well everything went.
*no longer fears interviews*

Good luck on waiting for your phone call!!! I actually feel excited waiting to hear how you did!

Tony

Is it possible for you to be accepted for 2009 but also put on the waitlist for this year?

Great to hear Matt! Good luck and I hope you get the news that you are looking for.:luck::luck:

first off:
thanks metalmd and tony and eel and paramedic lizard
i dont really know your actual names (aside from tony) so i apologize for that much. i am sure you posted your identity somewhere at some point in time.

as far as how admissions works:
the class for 2012 is filled. everyone who has been accepted has sent in a deposit.
IF i am accepted for the class of 2013, then I get first dibs on the wait-list for this year pending anyone has to retract their matriculation agreement.
Otherwise i will have a seat waiting for me in '09.
My deposit will be due October 1st of this year (pending acceptance).
I am pretty stoked about all of this~! If the worse happens, then at least I gained confidence during this period and i feel more deserving of being one of the select small percentage that gain admittance to a US medical school!
😀

ps: btw--i hear that LECOM-B sent me a letter in the mail regarding my application status, most likely a rejection--but hey, i expected a lot of those. I also talked to AZCOM and they are currently looking over my file today to determine whether or not I will be granted an interview or denied.
I think i can deal with rejections because i remember reading someone's signature saying, "It only takes one!"
