I am applying to pharm school this coming June and I know I want to be a PharmD. I just don't know if I should also pursue it as a double degree or not. Also is it possible to stop at PharmD and then decide later on whether or not to pursue the PhD (3 years)? Last thing, I am interested in research but I am worried that due to my writing disability (dysgraphia~ difficulty writing essays and such) would be difficult in terms of thesis/publishing. Thus is it still worth it or just stop at PharmD and start taking in the good dough already?

It says your pre-optometry...what made you switch? Can you not forSEE it in your future LOL haha, ok i'll stop. Now, on to more pressing issues. No one can decide for you whether or not to get the dual degree. Whats more important? Research/professional life or money? Do you want to spend you days in a lab with HCL and EtOH or do you want to spend it with the top down, switching fou lanes while screaming out "money aint a thang?" Your choice. I know what I'd do.

Do you have any research experience? If so, that should shape your decision. If you haven't worked in a research lab, I strongly recommend that you pursue that before contemplating a PhD program.

This is exactly what I went through and decided to just go for a PhD (or start a business). 🙂 I was torn between OD, PhD, Pharm D.

If I correctly understand what you are asking here (and I may not), I think the answer is likely no. The positive side of doing the degrees at the same time is that the PhD will possibly be shorter (maybe like the 3 years you mentioned). If you do the degrees separately, almost certainly any PhD you do will require significantly more than 3 years.

But of course the school would let you drop the money to be a PhD if you wanted. The question is how much more effort would it be later.

A PhD can take longer then 3 years, some take 5 and even more (it largely depends on your master professor, your research project, thesis, etc.) You can earn your PharmD and then work to obtain a PhD. Depending on what PhD you receive you may be able to have more research job opportunities.

You dont drop any money to earn a PhD is science fields, you receive a stipend and your "tuition" is typically paid for by a Dean's scholarship or your grant.
You need to understand a lab and research and all that before you sign on board for another 4-6 years. Additionally, with your dysgraphia I can sympathize and depending on the severity it you may struggle. It's not only writing publications, but also grants and in your notebook- where you'll write EVERY tiny piece of data, and it is typically handwritten (for carbon copy). You're the best judge of this though.
