Hi people, I am not a smart pre-med student but I always want to go to a med school. I am taking Kaplan Mcat course now and I took 2 simulated Mcat so far. I received 15 and 20. Nonetheless, I took a practice USMLE Step 1 with my friend together. He is a second year medical student, who received a 38 on the official MCAT. Surprisingly, I did far better on the USMLE Step 1 than he did. I dont know why buy I am certain that the MCAT is not a fair game for pre-med students. Also, My pre-med advisor told me that I am not smart enough and I would not be able to handle the hardwork in med school and med school is not for me. I just want to know that whether there is a MD in the US who is not smart also but you are a doctor now. Is there anyone know such a doctor? I cannot handle the MCAT. Is there anything I can do to help myself to become a doctor?

This has to be the funniest post I have read. How well did you and your friend do on the USMLE?

First off tell whomever says you can't to 'go to H*ll!'

My reason for wanting to go into medical school was a life-changing surgery. Doc removed the part of my brain that caused seizures, and I've been seizure free and off all meds for almost 9 years now. BUT the neuropsych tests they did after the surgery showed deficits in math and science. As we all know, one does not get into med school by avoiding these subjects. So in the spirit of Nizche, I decided to major in chemistry. Earned that degree in 03, gpa 2.3 🙁 Almost done with a second BS in bio gpa 3.5, cum just over 3.0.

So first thing you have to do to succeed is walk into that counselor's office and flip them off. Second thing to do is study study study. Stop saying you can't do the MCAT, as someone who has overcome surgical deficits, I can tell you that saying 'your not good at tests, have test anxiety, not good at the mcat' are just excuses that keep you from doing what you need to.

I can't tell you that there are doctors out there like you are hoping for (I know there are a lot of book smart dumb-@sses). But do not worry, there is at least one other 'not smart' pre-med 😉

First off, Advisors suck sometimes so dont listen to them. If you want to be a doc there are ways to do it without being a super genius, and all it takes it alot of hard work and loving what you're doing. My first simulated MCAT was a 19, I ended up with a 34 because I worked my butt off.
Moral of the story: YOU CAN DO IT :luck:

A while ago, I used to think innate intelligence / IQ / smarts was the most important quality a person can have, and that being a genius was better than being a hard worker. Now, I see that this is the wrong way to think about it.

Hard work comes first above smarts. If you are a hard worker (and it seems like you are), you have what it takes to get into and get through med school, and to succeed in general in life. So do not worry.

Work hard, study hard, and you will show your premed advisor how wrong he/she was to tell you you're not smart enough. 👍 🙂

I graduated near the top of my class in high school, and I have an excellent GPA in university, but I don't chalk any of that upto "being smart". The fact of the matter is, I can name a bunch of people I went to high school with, who were insanely intelligent, but are performing very poorly in College. Sure, being able to remember facts, numbers, and equations easier than others is a great advantage, but at the end of the day, you'll get out of college what you put in. I review and read daily, and I don't leave things to the last minute. Stay on top of your classes, review and make good study notes, and there's no reason why you can't be an MD.

Thank you for sharing your opinion here. I do study and study alot. I would dedicate twice amount of time on the MCAT than my Kaplan MCAT classmates. Let's assume that I can do okay on the official MCAT, however, I may end up with a " Negative" recommendation letter from my school pre-med committee. " We will not write you a recommendation letter until we see your official MCAT score " The head of the pre-med committee said.

I've always been brilliant but often lacked discipline; hence, my undergrad grades are less than stellar. Never learned to study until I got into PA school which was certainly no cakewalk but I finally figured out how I learn best and learned to NOT PROCRASTINATE and graduated with honors. I test well which has always been a blessing. I have tremendous respect for those who struggle to earn good grades and achieve well despite a learning disability, etc. Being brilliant has often made me lazy. Let's not forget that not everyone else flies as fast as we do, but hopefully we all eventually get where we're going. Personally I'll be damn proud of this guy/girl if s/he gets into and through med school and imagine would make a very caring clinician.

Something I noticed in Highschool, and no offense to anyone, but the smartest people in my school had zero common sense. The top 10% of the grade accounted for half the car wrecks people were in that went to my highschool. I have a high iq but I wouldn't think that i was a genius.

You can always ask other science professors who's not on the pre-med committeee. Or you can go take a single science class at a community college or another college close by and do well in it. Then you can as him/her for a letter. There's always a way around everything.

There is no way you did better than a second year med student on the USMLE Step 1. I call troll.
There is no way you can answer second and third order pathophys questions without the classes and can't break 20 on the MCAT.

I second this. BS.

yeah, I really believed this troll until the USMLE crap. Step 1 tests all the basic science materials from year 1 and 2, you can't just pull that out of your arse.

I say we wrest control of this thread away from this troll and turn it into a shining example of SDN hubris!

I'll start by continuing with the partly posed question.

How many of you consider yourself less-than-brilliant but still know that med school is in your future?

How many of you think you are brilliant?

A medical prodigy?

Discuss. 😀

Brilliance is like insanity -- if you can articulate that you think you are brilliant, you likely aren't. Truly brilliant people don't perceive that they are. Then again, I'm the exception that proves the rule. 🙄

If you don't know enough science to do well on the MCAT, how could you already know the pathophys/pharm/histo/path/anatomy/biochem/micro that Step I tests? I hate to just accuse you of lying, but I don't believe that you are doing better than a second year medical student on practice step I exams... which you have no reason to be taking anyway. 😕

There are plenty of physicians who are not geniuses, but who work very hard and are good doctors. However, without a generally above-average level of intelligence, it is a very hard road.

Agreed. Weird enough I heard a Harvard professor use this quote when I asked him about the brilliant students in his diff. eq. class. I thought he made it up off the top of his head, guess not.

Anyone a math major there? This dude taught my organic chem class and was the best teacher I've ever had.

I somehow made it into Northwestern, and I know that I'm going to be the dumbest person in the class, but I'm not worried. If you can make it in, you can make it through.

This is probably not true. Guaranteed half the people in your classes will feel this way prior to starting.

thank you for finally saying this. there's no way.

and people often get into places they dont belong. if you're not intelligent enough for something and you get in, you'll eventually be weeded out.

If you are not smart, you should definitely try to get into a med school discussion. Hey, you're here already! There are probably plenty of people here like you.

Riiiiiiggggghhhhhhtttt.. That quote came from a man with a genius IQ who was capable of manifesting his ideas nearly instantly.

I agree with Marx & Foucault. Here's a modern day translation: "Let those who are not smart enough continue to call themselves "hard workers" so that the truly smart ones can sit back and sip lemonade while the dumb slaves earn them money".

I don't think his bump post was even on-topic. Epic fail first post. 👎

all these people are bashing naturally intelligent people.. who said such people do good in HS? in HS and in college people think of me as a genius.. i dont know why - really... they just do... maybe they are trying to get me mad...

anyways.. im onw of those who dont need to study a lot to get A's.. but im a lazy person, so in HS i did okay - mostly B's since I didnt do my HW and got like 100's on the tests...

In college, i still am that lazy person, but I still do my hw, since I know I am at that point in my life where each point matters.. I do most of my hw.. and still do well in the tests.. needless to say i spend abt only.. a fourth of the time most people in my classes spend after studying.. that being said.. i am not doing worse than I was in HS..

so all you people bashing us so-called "geniuses" are just jealous.. and we are not really geniuses..lol
