I'm a senior in high school and I want to be a pharmacist ever since middle school. from 9-11th grade, I got A's and a few B's. about 3.8 GPA. I was so set on becoming a pharmacist. Senior year I'm taking AP chem and AP calc AB and I'm doing miserably in these classes. I really like chem but we got our first test back and I recieved a 66%. I know it's really bad. And in calc we've taken 2 tests so far. I got a 77% on the first and a 64% on the second. Oh yeah and I studied so hard for the tests. Ugh. And math used to come so easily to me. I'm was so used to seeing 100% on a test. But not anymore. I feel really discouraged. I was sure I did well on the calc test.

I'm applying to a 0-6 school this year but I want to decide if this is really what I want to do. I just don't want to spend my college years stressing about school all the time if I'm already having struggles with these AP classes.

I want to decide now rather than waste all this time in college. My mom is already telling everybody I'm going to be a pharmacist. They have high hopes for me because they think I'm the "smart" child. Little do they know...

Can someone please give me advice?

2 years ago, I was here at the airport by myself with a student visa. Non of my family members came with me to this god damn life. With no English skill (a kindergarden reading level ) and a solid F grade in pre-algebra test at the begining of high school sophomore, I was totally lost.

After countless failures and hundreds people rejected and refused me, I finally now became a straight A student. Yes I am still doing slower work than other guys. But I will spend the time and less sleep to do it.

Don't give up untill you've got nothing left. Just hanging on the edge and you will get it through. 👍

Life sucks for me. But it worth it, you can learn so many things in middle of difficulties.

First you have to realize that aside from getting AP credits to jumpstart your freshman year, no one will care how you did in high school (aside from the colleges you're applying to for undergrad of course). So don't fret about not doing too well right now. Focus on doing what you need to get into the college you want to.

As far as pharmacy and your future in it, don't sell yourself short. Just because you've had a rough start with chem and calc doesn't mean you won't cut it as a pharmacy applicant or a pharmacy student. Some students need a lot more affiliation with a topic before they can truly grasp it. If you feel that you're chemistry isn't solid you should find peace in the fact that you can simply retake it in college and you'll have another crack at it. Don't let this hinder you from making a sincere effort now though because you still have to get into college.

Btw, I find that AP classes can be harder than many of their college equivalents so your performance now is not necessarily indicative of how you'll do once you get to college. Don't loose hope of your dream yet. Don't worry about living up to any labels your family or friends give you be that the "smart kid" or the "town idiot". Just keep your head up and do what you do. Have confidence in your ability to cope because you've obviously handled science classes before.

You'd be surprised how many students who go to pharm school have low gpa in General chem and math in college. Don't sweat it. What you need to learn now is how to study effectively and manage your time. There are plenty of guides out there. Just so you know, a lot of pharm school won't accept AP credits to fulfill their core requirements. Since you have to take the same subjects again, you'll have a better start than many of your peers. Have you thought about other fields like becoming a doctor or dentist?

Ok I'm a junior and I'm in Algebra II Honors. The class is a joke but I'm lucky to be in here because I failed freshman year on purpose. So basically, you are lucky to be in AP Chem and Calc, arguably one of the few most hardest AP's out there that I WISH I could take, so again, good job on getting into those classes. YOU ARE NOT STUPID, you are having trouble with Calc and you know it. Get a tutor or stay for extra help, do what you need to do man.

My advice is that you do not stress about this, just make sure you get the help you need to get an A in both classes. I would suggest a tutor if you parents can afford it because that is really the best way to understand something. People are saying that you should no be worried about your grades. I agree because you will get into some great schools already so its not a big deal. Focus on SAT's and getting an A in your AP classes.

And let me finish by saying that you are not stupid. You have a 3.8 for crying out loud! Give me a break. Good luck.

Everyone runs into trouble eventually. Calm down, look at where your problems are, find solutions.

If Calc and Chem are giving you a hard time the best thing to do is to figure out where your mistakes are. In math courses (technically Chemistry is science, but I'm guessing your problems are mainly coming from the formulas and charts and crap) the tiniest mistakes are what trip you up the worst. I would just pay more attention to each individual question and stay level headed. If it's the concepts that are tripping you up then find a friend who can help you with it... someone in your class or someone who's already taken the course. It would be good if it was a close friend, someone who know's how you think.

If anything think of this as a learning experience. At least you've realized your troubles early on, think of how much worse it would have been if you started having trouble in college; where it really starts to count.

I can totally relate to the whole, 'smart' kid thing, my mom is exactly the same, haha. Our normal conversations about my future go like this:

Me: So mom, what can you see me as when I grow up?
Mom: A Pharmacist.
Me: Why? I don't really like chemistry, but I've really enjoyed AP Bio and Human Phys this year, I was kind of thinking of being a nurse or a doctor...
Mom: I think you should be a pharmacist because you're smart, and they make a lot of money.
Me: Doctors are smart and make good money too...

10 minutes later

Me: So I think I want to go to Samford.
Mom: You should go to Auburn.
Me: ... why?
Mom: They have a good Pharmacy school.

Lol, in the end though, it's your life, no one is going to get angry at you for switching choices, they have no right to. It's natural for us to change our minds a few times at this point. You also have 4 years of college to make a final decision on Pharmacy school, if it's not right for you, you will know by then.
