Everyone emphasis on the importance of EC and mine sucks... mainly because I have no time. During the school year, I barely have time to sleep because of work and school work if I don't study for at least 6-8 hours everyday I wouldn't be getting the grades I am getting. And during the summer, I work full time for 40-50 hours a week to pay for school in the fall/ spring. I have no medical related experience. And for some reason every hospital I call asking if they want me to volunteer i am usually turned down. What should I do.

I hear ya..same situation as you (I worked full-time 40-50 hours/week while going to school). I've been told that work can also count as an EC but you would have to explain your circumstances in your personal statements. I would try to get some health-related volunteer work (free clinic for example) though.

Working and studying together is definitely hard to manage. 40-50hours a week of work must be tiring, but that sounds like you still have weekends off no? I know its a lot of a work but still would help if you have some related experience.

Apply to hospitals for volunteer, how can they turn you down? Determine the cause and work on it, if you applied and follow their application rules, i don't see reason for them to turn you down. If money is an issue, why not try working in a hospital? or medical related field? Gets paid and gain the necessary exposures. Keep trying 👍🙂

Work counts as an extracurricular. Don't worry about it too much, because it sounds like you still do a lot.

If you want to volunteer or add some other things, do it. If not, don't force yourself to do things that will hurt your grades and/or job performance. Make sure you elaborate a lot on your job experience in the application as well. I worked all through college and the summers as well...it wasn't a problem.
