Hey guys,

So I just got fired from my summer internship and was wondering how this was going to effect me in terms of applications and work in the future. Basically, during on the the first few days (when they didn't have much for me to do), I was told to check out the formatting of this work website (sort of like wikipedia for the organization). I didn't have any material to test out the formatting, so I basically wrote a bunch of nonsense with different fonts and headings. Problem is that I forgot to delete it and it stayed on the site. Fast-forward a couple weeks, I'm getting a call from my supervisor that some higher-ups had seen it and complained, so she fired me for being unprofessional. The worst part is that once they actually had stuff for me to do, I thought that I was coming in on-time, working hard and efficiently, and being a pretty good worker in general.

So clearly it's my own fault for being stupid and careless, but where do I go from here? I'm going to omit it from my resume, but future employers will be able to discover it if they want, correct?

This summer I have also been volunteering at the BMC and studying for my MCATS (I'm hoping to get mid 30s). Next semester I'm going to be a senior at Tufts university and will be looking to take a year off after school before applying to medical schools. My general stats are as follows:

I'm a Clinical Psych Major and Child Dev. minor
cGPA = 3.67
sGPA = 3.60
With a strong upwards trend since my freshman year

ECs:
-Ultimate Frisbee team Treasurer and hopefully captain next year (2 appearances at nationals)
-Tae Kwon Do team (I've won a few competition medals)
-Helped in organizing and running both community clinics for playing ultimate and tae kwon do
-Volunteered at a community preschool (50 hours)
-One summer of PTSD Neuroimaging research at a lab
-Hospital Volunteering (10 hours so far this summer), going to probably amp up my hours for the summer as well as carry on through the semester
-Named Scholarship
-Senior year Clinical psychology year-long internship (hopefully in a hospital setting)
-I've only really witness one colonoscopy, so that's all I have in terms of shadowing

-I've volunteered at a hospital and animal shelter when I was like in middle school, does that count at all (50+)

I guess my application isn't as strong as it should be, but hopefully I'll be able to bolster it over the next 2 years. What do you guys think that I should focus on improving?

Sorry this was so long/a 2-parter.

Definitely focus on getting clinical experience.

No, volunteerism from middle school doesn't count unless you continued it from when you were about 12 until now.

You need more clinical experience, case and point. More shadowing wouldn't hurt either.

^ agreed, get some more clinical experience. And if you don't put it on your app, no one will find out that you've been fired. There really isn't a database for them to check through, and no one has time to check for something if you don't list it.

Moving to WAMC.

Echoing others, you need more clinical experience. 10 hours isn't going to cut it at all, and the 50 hours from middle school don't count for anything. If something happened during that time that made you interested in medicine, that might be something you can talk about in your PS, but in general you should not make a work/activities entry for something that happened in middle or high school unless you continued that activity.

Good choice. There's no such thing as national employment database. So unless your name was on the company website, the position was searchable through Google, or you have it on a social networking site like Facebook or Linkedin, then the former job doesn't exist. The only way anyone will ever find out is if they get into your IRS records, and I can only see that happening with government jobs. There are some job applications which ask you to list all previous employment for say 10 years. Some people are truthful on it, and some aren't. Sadly, sometimes people end up working jobs they either aren't proud of, or were fired from. Leaving gaps in the resume can be a red flag, but as a pre-med that is not in any way expected to work, there shouldn't be an issue.

When I get blasted for my position on this to omit jobs, I usually say in response: If you were secretly a stripper for a few years (and there was obviously no record of it anywhere), would you disclose it?

Otherwise, with more ECs and a high MCAT score, you should be in great shape. Never speak of this job again and you should be fine. Best of luck! 🙂

Thanks for the advice guys. I guess I leave out this internship on my resume, so hopefully that will be the end of that. Also now that I have more time, I'm going to start crushing more volunteering hours and start looking around for shadowing opportunities.

As for what I wrote: I was super bored because they hadn't given me anything to do that day, and they gave me no material to format so I have to create my own... Basically ended up writing a short story set in the middle ages about how you needed to defeat the evil dragon Smaug to be granted access to our database. I guess my heirarchy of bosses weren't LotR fans.

God that was so dumb.

OP, you come across as super-likable and it looks like the rest of your app is solid. You don't have to mention this on your app. I think you'll get in somewhere great. 🙂

Just leave it out of the resume like others said. Besides, chances are there is more than 1 person with your name.

Trying to use middle school volunteering for medical school apps is hilarious and a new to me lol. Definitely doesn't count though.

Wowowowow, now I know the reason why my SDN usage went from like 0 to 4 hrs/day in that last week. You're spoiling me!

Also I suppose the consensus is to leave out my middle school experiences. Tough day.

Thanks for all the input/support!

Also play ultimate! What years did you go to nationals? My uni has gone the last two!
