I hate bio

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
lol
let me rephrase this...wrote this when I was frustrated...
studying for the DAT, there is range of how much you should know on GC, OC, QR, PAT,
BUT
BIO is just toooooo broad and really any question can come up...
even if you say cliff's ap bio is all you need,
is there really anyone who can retain all that info? down to the smallest detail which can come up on the DAT...

frustrated is what i'm feeling...I do not hate bio...just the process of studying for bio section on DAT if that makes sense...

It gets 100x broader after undergrad.

umm... the reason why u chose a field such as dentistry is to SPECIALIZE. it doesn't get broader... it gets more specific on physiology and human biology. for example u were never need to know about chem or orgo or echinoderms in dentistry unless ur patients are toothless starfish

I love those things.

Lmao

Yea bio seems to be the toughest section to master. I think it has to do with the wording of the questions and how easy it is to get at least a few wrong.

Yes it does, way too broad.

I had a kid on here tell me I should think about a different career because I don't like bio and I had trouble getting high scores on the practice tests because I am a chem major, so I haven't taken classes about plant, genetics, etc..

I feel you. I have a strong background in bio, and this was probably the one section I wasn't too worried about, but I got a 19 : x

If you hate bio, good luck in dental school.....

Dental school is not all about biology, you know.

Sure there are classes such as anatomy, pathology, neuroscience, physiology but they are all relevant courses and way more interesting than any undergrad biology class or the dat biology. its totally different along with the clinical classes its completely different.

all in all... the surgeons, dentists, specialists that took the dat and are now 50 etc don't remember sh-t from the dat... and back then it was a checklist as in: 'oh u did the dat?' 'CHECKMARK' YOU'RE IN!!!!!! and they were all great dentists/surgeons etc etc. the dat is just a way to filter the traffic of applicants, it doesn't make u a better dentist nor does it correlate, despite all teh numbers, these ppl that say taht high dat scores correlate to good dentsits should take a math class or 2... just b/c they are correlated does not mean there is 'cause' and more importantly the ones assessing us never ever had to worry about the dat as we did. it has progressively become more and more difficult and will continue to do so, but the education of a dentist remains... so in the end its a means to an end, u may not like bio or patrick (echinodermata) or spongebob (porifera) but u know u like dentistry and u know u got to do it, b/c in the end it'll be worth it!

and to be honest the ONLY biology subjects that they should even consider to test on DAT are biochem, physiology and ANATOMY! anaotmoy is so dam important and those of u (like me) who have taken the course or done kadaver dissections can appreciate how intricate teh mouth really is!

In dental schools you are though so many useless things. atleast more than 50% you will never use. Including anatomy. But i agree with this poster who states that head and neck anatomy is very imp. as you know there are many students in dental who didnt do biology for undergrad for a reason, its dull and you cant really do anything with it other than go to grad school. to come back to the topic all this stuff is just a check list to filter out people but not useful in life.

in my univ the undergrads are lucky enough to dissect and share the specimens with the dentistry and med students, and although we don't do any teeth, we do cover the neck and cranial nerves and follow them right into the foramen as the emerge out of the parotide EAM etc etc and have bell ringers etc. and let me tell u its amazing! but i've heard enough from my dental and med friends that anatomy for post grad students in dentistry and med seems difficult (at first) to them if they don't do it in undergrad. honestly they should add it to the dat and take out the useless material in test. all in all u cant change the dat so I'm just rambling but still...

No adding it to dat would be too much. due to the fact that many non traditional students who are not bio-majors will have hard time preparing for it. Plus in undergrad institution its next to impossible to have cadavers of human bodies because not everyone who does bio major goes into health related fields so its a huge waste.

Yes its interesting true, but basically if its not in the oral cavity and they have problems that basic cleaning, or drainage of the cavities dont fix, they are referred to physicians.
Yes you do that in every single dental school. Yes anatomy is difficult no matter what school you are in but just like anything else some people are really good at memorizing stuff and do really well and some people do poorly.

i was thinking more on hte lines of brachial plexus, cranial nerves with simple fn'ts etc... but seriously it serves more purpose and is easier than any ecology and or useless evolution. IM NEVER GOING TO TREAT PATRICK THE STARFISH IN THE TUNDRA AFTER A PERIOD OF ECOLOGICAL SUCCESSION AND THEN TEACH HIM HOW TO DO TRICKS AND GIVE HIM TREATS (operant)

keep in mind that when you sign up for biology, you learn broad topics. When you sing up for medical or dental school you will learn the things related to that subject.
so just randomly teaching all anatomy and physiology for undergrads is not helpful at all. you major in biology because you want to get experience in almost all fields of bio. just like any other major.

You might not treat starfish, but other students might find something in that starfish which might be helpful in improving our own knowledge on how to deal with similar problems we might face.

Plus randomly memorizing cranial nerves or bracheal plexus servers no useful purpose. you need to lean and understand all the problems associated with then only it serves some purpose, which is extremely out of scope for undergrad students. its like teaching medical school classes in your freshmen year. it does not make sense.
