Only 2-1/2 weeks more of being free slave labor. I hope the school has at least made a lot of money off of me, because I'm sure not learning anything at the school clinic except how to kiss up to supervisors and how to avoid getting stuck with extra charts.

Good riddance. 🙄

which optometry school are you attending right now?

Is this true even for your clinical externships?

Externships are a different situation entirely -- at external sites you're generally treated with a lot more respect and more like a colleague than you are at the school clinics (I'm sure there are exceptions, I'm just speaking *generally*). I think it has a lot to do with being just one of 12 or 15 interns vs. being one of only one or two externs. The larger the group of people you are a part of seems to guarantee that you are treated as just labor rather than a valued contributor.

I am literally counting the hours until I get to start my externships! 😀

I started my third extern today. My first was at a VA hospital in Florida, which was great. I learned a ton and had a great time. Then I was back at school which sucked at first and then I learned to enjoy it. I stopped sucking up and just did what I wanted and then the doctors started to treat me a little better. I guess I just became more independent and the docs like it. There were a couple I still did not get along with or showed me respect, but they don't matter anyway.

Today I worked with a retinal specialist all day. Just me and him. I did a lot of observation, but I learned a lot. He had me look at everything and talked through what he was saying. I was a good start to the extern.

Externs are so much better than being at school!

Hi, OD-07. I read your post and it amused me b/c I hated clinic also and now I practice and hate that too. However I have no rules except my own, you should consider your own practice or a new profession before its to late. Good luck. From Hollywoods wife.

I am not quite sure why you are so upset. If the school do not make money, they can always charge higher tuition. Part of our education is the internship. I agreed that some internships are harder than other depends on where you go but the experiences are still priceless. I rather worked hard and see more patients than sitting around in clinic. It is better to make mistake now compare to when you are out in the real world.
