Not to discredit your experience at your school, but aren't you a 1st yr dental student? If so, you have plenty of time to develop an opinion contrary to what you feel at this point. If you ask most dentists, they will tell you there were always at least a few that were jerks. Don't take me wrong. I loved most of the faculty I worked with at UTSD. But, there were a few that were jerks and I don't care if I ever see them again. Wait until you work in the clinic and especially with some specialists.

That said, if it weren't for the faculty I had, i probably wouldn't have graduated.

If what Suarez is talking about is operative faculty, then they typically are nice, and there's not much of a basis to form a negative opinion. Just wait till prosthodontics and endodontics. Especially prosthodontics.. I swear some of them beat puppies for fun on weekends.

Actually yappy I don't think these individuals are more interesting than the average Joe. Instead they are just people who have their basic needs met with no financial concerns, get bored, and start pondering ridiculous ideas. It's simple as that.

This is so true that it's almost funny. I am convinced that if these individuals would experience the alternatives of which the grand majority of the population are currently in that they would thank their lucky stars everyday for their current socioeconomic position - the abuse and crappy pay most people get, it's astonishing but it definitely is reality.

Absolutely. This was my experience 12 years in another profession. My father is a physician so I grew up rather insulated from the average workplace environment. I really tried to fit into the everyday paradigm of socioeconomic average Joe: over a decade. But in the end honestly I couldn't handle the crappy pay, but mostly I tired of the daily abuse. I don't think its an understatement I think for a person with an above average IQ what passes as the new normal in the average work environment in the contemporary U.S. is mental and at times physical abuse (esp. dependent on the industry).

Finally I had had enough I finally determined to either join a monastery or do something meaningful in health care like my father. In my religion we don't have a clergy or monasteries so I was left with the option of doctor. Good Lord it looks like I may have escaped the torment of the average contemporary workplace for good.😍

In my experience, its hell on earth in general out there. It really is.:scared:

Having these life experiences will be extremely valuable because when things get rough in dental school (and it will), you will remember why you are there and have the drive to do what you are there for. It will also save you a lot of energy from complaining, as I saw a lot of my classmates doing, because you will know that there are much worse things out there than dental school.

I think a lot of times people forget to put things into perspective. Yes, dental school is a challenging process, but many times over your situation in life could be 10x worse. When my dad was my age (23), he was put in a North Vietnamese concentration camp for 7 years because he was a high ranking South Vietnamese officer. So when people ask me why I'm doing a DDS/PhD and trying to understand my personal reasons, it's hard to explain. Do what you enjoy. Your life could always be worse, so I think everyone should just remember to put things in perspective. Of course this doesn't stop the regular complaining and all, but we get through it, life is always going to be better. Things are challenging because it's worthwhile. Some things seem stupid in dental school, but we all go through the same process and it's about getting things done and moving on with your life. Grades = doesn't matter in the long run.

2 years later update:
Thanks guys for your replies, was just reading my old comments lol

I ABSOLUTELY hated my 1st year, I still get mad when I think about my first year, had great marks in everything else and ended up passing that hard class but I struggled a lot with my hand skills which made it a pain for me knowing I had to spend hours and hours waxing while my friends were long gone... Ive always been great at everything I do so having a hard time with wax carving made me feel miserable!

2nd year starts and I find myself loving it way more than 1st year, why? because we actually do REAL things in the real dental world, composite, amg, preps, real impressions, no more wax carving over and over again and we actually learn about diagnosis and much more interesting things... My hand skills = BETTER! I feel so good! 2nd year is really demanding and I have to stay late in the labs almost everyday and every weekend but Im not alone, everybody else in my class spend their life at school (no kidding, sometimes we wouldnt leave before midnight), I feel like Im learning useful things that will make me a better dentist and I feel that what Im studying is actually gonna help me in life
2nd year ends: I LOVE DENTISTRY!!!!!!!

Entering 3rd year in a few weeks, I heard it was even harder than 2nd year... but Im so excited 😀

Anyway I just want to tell everyone reading this thread: many people hate dental school, its normal I think... doesnt mean you hate dentistry! also you get more mature every year... I was only 20 in D1, I was still a kid IMO
PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE makes you better

Don't listen to these people who are telling you to just quit right away. That's not a positive solution and will only foster a quitter's mentality which will follow you for the rest of your life. If you quit on something as important as dental school, you're going to make excuses to quit anything else that might seem tough at the moment.

I understand the concept of cutting your losses, but you are nowhere near that reality. You're actually in a winning position. You made dental school, and have a great opportunity in a great career.

My advice to you is to change your personal/social life. I don't think it's dental school itself, but your personal life in general that is affecting your mood. The school might kick you out for poor grades/performance, but don't quit.

I am currently a first year and it's clear that I am one of the worst in my class when it comes to handskills. I am in jeopardy of failing 3 classes this semester. There is literally no extra help available at my school until you fail. I am really thinking that dentistry is not for me and I should start looking into other options. Any thoughts? Do your skills have tutoring if you need it?

If you're not happy with what you are doing, then maybe you should shift to another course. Dental school is tough, but it's alot more difficult if you dont want to be part of it. You dont really have to be smart, just change your study habit. Sure it will help you to pass your classes. You're just on you first year, theres still room for improvement, you just have to keep on practicing. 🙂

Dude, the person that wrote that post probably finished dental school in 2014.

On a side note, I’d be game if any of you *****s want to come back from the past and argue more about affirmative action.

Oh, there’s just this really heated discussion about Howard and affirmative action back on pg. 2 or so and things play out pretty predictably. It looks like it got pretty aggressive and some things...got said. I bet none of those people have been on the forum for at least five years.

Gave me something fun to read while procrastinating studying for my prosth exam. Thank you, sah!

And idk, it's my master plan to come back after 10 years and resurrect all of my old threads. Should make for some fun comments...

Thank you  I reached half of the heated discussion and now I will finish the rest after I have my lunch.

Reading during a lecture... I had to stop halfway through page 2 to prevent myself from LOLing. Wow. I'll need to continue this in a different setting. Back to the CNS, that will quickly kill any desire to LOL.
