I studied a lot for orgo quiz last week, but then I didn't have time to practice the lewis structure. When the class got the quiz back, 90 percent of the class aced the quiz except me and about 2 other people.

I'm pretty irritated because I studied 3 days straight learning all of the concept from chapter 1 to 2. However, most of the class didn't even read chapter 1 and 2, they just practiced on drawing out the isomers for different compounds. rrrrrrrrr

Now, my professor went on to say how I should have practiced and be prepared for the quiz and such. rrrrrrr

Sorry for venting, but is it true that one should not be learning every concept in the book but rather from the professor?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I have learned that you have to learn it the way the teacher wants it learned. For example, my OChem Prof says Ionic bonds are strongest and my A&P Prof says Covalent bonds are strongest. 🙁

I thought ionic bonds are stronger than covalent bonds. I might be wrong though. Does anyone know for sure?

Ionic bonds, in water, are weak. In cell biology, when listing the 4 weak interactions that occur in cells, ionic bonds are part of that list.

Well, IMHO studying the concepts is important, however, I learned in orgo that you have to apply it by practicing with problems. Did you do that? It does no good to solely read and memorize concepts....do problems and more problems. Sounds like you are just starting out, so you will eventually adapt a study method that works for you. Orgo can be tough but stick with it. It's not 'how much' you study per se, but 'how' you study. Good luck...when its over it will be a wonderful feeling!

Totall agree with this bloke.
Organic Chemistry exams seem to more application, and not much 'Explain the concept of blah'

I've always been a 2-week crammer (Swot Vac, and week before swot vac), 6-7 hours a day, and been a 50-60% person. Developed a good technique in 3rd year, got heaps of Distinctions. All using the same time. I get more out of 4 hours then most people do in a day. All due to 'how' I study

Oh, don't shortcut on Organic Chem in 1st year... it really helps on making later Medicinal Chemistry subjects alot easier! (assuming courses around the world are kinda similar)

d.a.n. , What was the technique you developed that helps you get 6-7 hours worth of study in only 3-4? If it was mentioned in your response somewhere, forgive me, I'm not well-versed on the "Aussie" lingo.
What's "Swot Vac"?
