So I just got a cold sore and I have an interview later this week. Do you think I should try to cover it up with something? I feel that my interviewer may slightly look down on me for this. This is a very embarrassing situation for me. I seem to get these when I am very stressed and this being my first interview this pops up. Do you think this could possibly negatively effect my chances of a good interview? I am still going to be confident and positive, yet I still feel my interviewer will judge me, any thoughts?

you could show off how smart you are, knowing that your cold sore is caused by herpes simplex I virus 😉

Dude, if they judge you for a cold sore, they are in the wrong business! I would not worry about it at all. You are you plus or minus the cold sore. It should not have any effect on your app (as long as you are confident and don't let it get you down)! 🙂

As there's nothing you can really do about it, I wouldn't stress about it. If cover-up makes it look better and makes you feel more confident, then go ahead and put some on. It really shouldn't affect your interview though. I'm sure your interviewer won't be focused on your appearance--especially things like cold sores that are totally out of your control. Just make sure it doesn't affect your confidence level!

Just tell your interviewer you want to attend medical school so that someday you can call in Valtrex scripts for yourself.

I certainly understand how you may feel self conscious about it, but honestly cold sores are very, very common. As you said, go in there and be your confident and positive self. Do you have any acyclovir/Zovirax you can take in the meantime? Maybe it will be almost gone by the time of your interview anyway!

[sarcasm] It's just like if you had HIV. You'd be a risk to your patients, so it's an automatic rejection. [/sarcasm]

how about pimples? do adcoms reject you for those?

how about if i nick myself while shaving and my interview is at 9 AM~

Cold sore = herpes = automatic rejection. Sorry. 🙁

I know it's really shallow but appearance matter's. If your a girl use make up or something, if your a guy then your F'd.

You could buy some of that cream stuff at Walgreen or rite aid.

SOLUTION: Make out with your interviewer immediately upon entering the room.

Except then you wouldn't be THAT smart. Herpes simplex type II can cause oral sores too. Much much less frequently, but it happens. 😛 Fortunately when it does happen, it almost never recurs - hence the reason why its not a well known fact.

OP, 50% of people are seropositive for type I by adulthood. This increases to more than 80% in people over the age of 50. (although a fewer percentage experience recurrent symptoms, and symptoms nearly always decline with age). Your interviewers, as physicians, will likely be aware of these statistics. The general population, maybe not.. but they aren't the ones offering you a chance at admission are they?

I think if i was interviewing someone with a noticeable cold sore, but could see that they were still a very confident person and didnt let their sore make them uncomfortable, I'd think that this is a great person that is obviously not superficial enough to let someone like a cold sore make them feel any different.

Go to your university student health clinic and get an rx for Valtrex. alternately you could try acyclovir or zovirax ointment. anyway i wouldn't dismiss the makeup thing, my bro is a total guy but he got a nasty pus filled zit on his face and i made him conceal it cuz he was too ugly to look at. now it's like his little secret...he covers up the red dots with 'golden caramel'..lol

Don't even joke. I guarantee this will happen to me at least once.
Trust me, it happens. I apparently really, really suck at shaving and constantly have nicks and ingrown hairs. You just have to accept that it's part of life and go on with your business. A doctor should understand.

Here's a tip for the shaving impaired guys: don't press down

Also your herpes face is probably fine and I bet this breakout was caused by the stress you're feeling now. So before your next interview go get a massage and take a dip in a hot tub or do whatever it is you need to chillax.

The cold sore is your body's way of saying "this is too easy for you, let's see what I can do to make it harder."

I hate cold sores.

I hate them too. I haven't had them in like 3 years.. until I began getting interviews. I can't believe the coincidence. I don't know if its just the season but I literally got 1 a week before my interview (3 months ago) and got one a week before my interview (today)...... fml .

Note -they both came up after a night at multiple bars.
