Okay.. so I got into an OOS dental school, and I am very happy and blessed about it. My family would prefer I stay in state though, considering my dad is sick with Parkinson's and would just need me to be around the house. The school I got into starts in the beginning of the summer. The Instate school that I am currently waitlisted at starts at the end of the summer. Say I am started at the OOS school and I get a call from the Instate school saying I got accepted. Would I still be able to go to that school? and what would I have to sacrifice to do that. Also, I have been advised to call the school I am waitlisted at and to tell them the situation I am in. Is that a bad idea? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks !!

Even if the two schools are scheduled such that you can conceivably (however unlikely it is) get a call from the in-state before it starts during the first week or two of the out of state, the out of state will not give you your money for tuition back, so keep that in mind.

I think that calling the school and making them aware would be appropriate if you're not using it as a way to get in

"This is my situation, and I have a strong interest in your school for this reason, so if I am offered a spot off the wait-list I would be glad to accept it promptly" is much different from

"My dad has Parkinson's so I really have to come here for dental school"
While I'm just some random scumbag on the internet and my opinion on this matter doesn't really mean ****, I would like to think that this is how it is in reality. I'll keep your father in my thoughts and hope you get into your in-state school. If it's UConn, the class is full and unless somebody has some sort of unexpected crisis where they need to drop, there will be no waitlist movement. Just for full disclosure. Best of lucky my friend.

What SS said is spot on. Some schools have told me during interviews that if you have a make or break situation and are on the waitlist, your best bet is to contact them about it and provide evidence as well. They will take it into account. I'm not sure if UDM is the in-state school you're talking about, but if it is you might want to email first and then call. I'm not quite sure if the emails are read too thoroughly.

Haha I would not say that to the dental school it was just something I brought up in this thread.. but thanks for the advice I think I will call the school and tell them. Thank you for keeping my dad in your thoughts it is very much appreciated.

It is UDM, and I am thinking about just calling them, why would you prefer emailing first? is it more professional to do that? just curious.

Remember when they sent that email about interest in being on the waitlist? They needed a record for file if people wanted to turn down their offers. I'm guessing conversations and responses get lost if they were purely by word of mouth. Don't get me wrong though, by after, I mean calling them a minute after you send out the email.
