I got a 34Q and the scores are PS12 VR10 BS12.
I am already registered for June 18th MCAT.
Should I take this? or should I just cancel and just
go with my current score?
What would you do?
I have 3.626 overall and 3.67 science from UCLA.
My first choice would be one of the UC schools, if not, I will just go anywhere I get into.
What do you think?

34 is amazing! Why do you feel the need to retake?

The typical advice is that unless there was something that happened on the exam date that affected your performance (illness, environment, tragedy), then you can assume that your performance was reflective of your abilities.

The MCAT tends to balance out such that if one subscore goes up, another will go down, and your overall score will remain nearly the same.

Your score is pretty well distributed and it's expected that you'll perform better on science than on verbal reasoning.

I don't see any reason to retake it unless there's a story that you haven't told us.

If you were consistently hitting 45 on your practice tests, retake it. I would probably retake it if you were averaging 44. Maybe 43...

Take it and run bro.

thanks guys for your responses!
The thing is, I literally thought it was the worst day ever when I took the exam.
It was unbelievable even to myself how much I got distracted by the typing sound of other people. I always try to relax and take things slowly because when I don't try to do so consciously, I get more nervous and hasty.
So, I ended up being in my verbal section when everyone else around me started typing on that day.
I used my earmuffs but it was no use.
It is so weird because the typing sound is incredibly annoying for me.
I literally thought I totally blew my verbal.
Has anyone felt the same way?
Don't you guys think it's so annoying to the point where you wanna punch the guys typing around you? That's how I felt.
I think, at least, if you have ever tried to read while others sitting right by type like they are crazy, you would understand.

Are you premeddiva on an AKA?

The exclamation marks in the title are eerily similar.

And yea definitely retake if you really want to get into UC's AND if you really felt you underperformed.

Hey Op,

I kind of know how you feel--I also felt my first MCAT test day was about the worst day ever. I was actually sick but decided to stick it out (I felt kind of OK at the beginning...). I had a really tough time focusing and by the time I got to the biological sciences section, I felt awful. I could hardly focus such that I had a terrible time answering questions with passages. To make things worse I took a 10-minute break with the clock running during bio! And lastly, I definitely guessed on a number of the bio questions because I had such a hard time focusing and remembering the passages.

So... I definitely felt I bombed the test--esp. bio. I was pretty depressed for the rest of the day. So I immediately signed up for the next MCAT, two weeks later, without even waiting for my scores. (FYI, knowing what I knew at the time, I should have voided my scores, but I kind of felt proud of myself for finishing and opted not to--not too bright on my part!

My second MCAT sitting I felt great, and I actually really enjoyed the test 🙂

The werid part is two weeks after that, I got my scores from the first test, expecting something in mid-upper 20's at best, since highest practice test score had been a 33. But when I checked my scores, sure enough, I had a 33! My "bomb" in bio was a 10.

I kind of paniced when I saw this because I figured my second MCAT score couldn't be that much higher than my practice tests. Amazingly, I was wrong, and my score went up quite a bit (along with my self-confidence, and honestly, my ego for at least a day!).

If you are absolutely positive you could have done a few points better (at least two, maybe three) then sure, go for it! But a 34 is a wonderful score! Had I known I had a 33 on my first test, there's a very good chance I would have stuck with it. But, my dream school's average was a 31, so the 33 was competetive.

I would imagine you would be competetive as you are at the UC's (though UCSF is always tough--I didn't even make it to the secondary), depending on your EC's.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do!

thanks guys for your responses!

I side with Brent. I love using computers and I play on them all the time, which makes it hard for my brain to switch into SERIOUS IMPORTANT LIFE TEST mode. Suffice to say I found myself slouching in my chair, picking answers without a great deal of thought at one point in the exam. I was the first official CBT date, so imagine how I felt.

Long story short, I wasn't thrilled with my 32 when I got it back, but at the time, I wasn't sure that I could do much better. At this point, I simply don't want to study for it again. As others said, you simply need to weight the options. A 34 is good but if you sincerely feel that the test day was messed up, you can retake it. Nerves get the better of people during their first time on the MCAT.

It is a high and BALANCED score, so you don't have to retake it unless you're aiming UCSF.

Depends what your goals entail. Top tier? retake.

I miss premeddiva too, chemnerd89.

I would have to say it depends on several things: where you plan to attend, whether you will be OOS at that school, how good/bad your ECs are, and I would only retake if I was absolutely positive I could do better. I mean what will stop your next test date from being even worse than the original? You alwasy gotta plan for the worst.

this happened to me last year. I took the test 2 times. the first time I had no typing going on during my VR and scored a 10. the second time the stupid kid behind me was typing REALLY LOUD during my VR and I could not concentrate. I got a 7 on the VR!

tips from the MCAT forum are to buy your own earplugs, put those in, AND put the given ear muffs on. supposedly it's complete silence. that's what i'm going to do this saturday and I'll let ya know how it worked. 👍

Good tip. I think maybe also taking a practice test or two in your school's computer lab to see how effected you are by noise and to test out the above tip.

stick with your current score (unless your practice test averages were like 40s or something)! that's awesome! i think a 34 is above the average for davis, irvine, and ucla (according the last MSAR) so you should hopefully be in good shape. you are in the ballpark of almost every school in the country. it'd be terrible to retake and get a lower score. i say go for it, relax since you won't need to study, and enjoy!

i also think the sound of typing is like nails on a chalkboard. i guess there aren't a lot of ways to have prepared for that part of the exam haha.

wtf? 34? lol when I got my mcat back (pretty much the same score) I had to go running to contain my excitement, after which I called every important person in my phone and set up a party for that night and never thought about the MCAT again... your score is great, don't do anything except apply, own interviews, and go to med school.
