I found my self have many interests....

-love science, especially biology
-love help people and doctors because I was patient and other reasons
-love business ideas, get excited about setting business plans and make a deal
-love debate and social justice, wanted to become a lawyer when I was younger. But I still love it
-love computer sciences, programming and online business
-love cooking, wanted to become Iron chef
-love kids, wanted to become an elementary school teacher.

How do I discover my dream career ? 😕

Go into research. Discover the "fountain of youth". Drink it and then do all the occupations you like.

Aww you're exactly how I was no more than like 6 months ago? This is how I did it , but first let me tell you what I wanted to be ...

A prosecuting attorney
A paralegal
An environmentalist
A meteorologist and stormchaser
A chef as well
A math teacher ( elementary level )
Then came Clinical Psychologist lol ! 😛

Okay , so this is what I'd ask myself , where do i see myself in say a year even? Studying what? Would i like what I am studying? Or would I get bored ? Do i see myself doing this for the rest of my life, what if I make a mistake? While with any decision comes the possibility of making a mistake . You got to narrow your long list down to your top 3 favorites then top two and then eventually the number one will follow through . List those jobs in order to how you like them , think about how each makes you feel? Does one make you fantasize more than other? If so what? What do you dream about when you think of that particular job ? Think of possible pros and cons that matter to you that may help you determine where you belong .

I see you have your status as pre-med is that something you feel very strong to ?

I hope I've helped some , if I think of more ways i will certainly post them . But this is how I helped myself with the same problem , my gosh though if only you could do it all ! 🙂

I have been into premed but recently I started to think what I really do in my life. I can't decide between med or law or business 🙁

Okay so have you acessed the other parts of my post to help answer your question? Like how do you see yourself with each ?

I would weigh the time cost heavily as well.

Business (minus MBA) 4-5 yrs.

JD (law degree)-7-8 years

MD-8-9 yrs.

For each one I added on an extra year of undergrad.

You have to ask yourself: "What do I want to be doing when I'm 57?" Personally, I want to be a Doctor. So that is what I am working towards. That is just one question you have to ask yourself. Just take a wide selection of classes in college and decide from there which route to take.

You just have to go with it.

You guys dont have to decide right now. You can goto college, takes classes in different subjects. Bio, Biz, CS, Psychology. Explore.

Since this is a medical board, Im gonna tell you to if you're thinking about medicine, shadow, alot. Secondly and more IMPORTANTLY, look ahead to what the climate of medicine will be. Its gonna take you guys at least 12 years before you can start practicing.

How are political agendas gonna affect healthcare? How is the economic condition gonna affect healthcare?

These are big questions which you need to consider.

Take all the intro classes to the pathway for those careers, such as bio, economics, maybe a legal studies course. See which you like the best and then choose based on that. It wouldnt hurt talking to a doctor, lawyer, business person (depending on what field). You obviously dont want to tell them your deciding between 3..you just want to know what they do, if they like there job, etc... do your own research what people here tell you should not change ur mind in anyway.

I wound up with pharm or PT as choices by process of elimination: like what fits my personality, and in what areas jobs are available. I also have lots of interests, and was having trouble figuring out where to start. So, I went to this branch of collegeboard (called MyRoad, its a $20 membership though) and read descriptions and researched interesting careers further.

Couple of questions: what country would you want to teach in? That might affect where you want to go to school. In America, I think there is supposed to be a surplus of elementary teachers. You can still probably get a job, just maybe not in a location you like.

Chef: your chances of being a renown chef are probably much smaller that of getting into med school. But i've never tasted your food, so maybe i'm wrong.

And often, enjoying a subject in school (say you love studying law) and liking the daily work of a lawyer are two totally different things.

Even if i liked blood and all, becoming a doctor does not seem worth it to me time-wise, both in and out of school. Especially if i had kids one day.

Most people on here say only to be a doctor if you can never see yourself being anything else. Definitely explore all other options in college. 🙂

oh and have you taken a personality test? they really helped me figure out what i was looking for in a job.

(It said i liked organization and stability, which i think is a very accurate assessment.)

Wow, you had to pay for that? Mine was definitely free...

I think it's great that you're doing some soul-searching. Medicine in particular requires a commitment that you won't really understand until you're really in the pre-med zone, then med school, then practicing. You live and breathe it. Ultimately, you might get to pick what kind of practice you'd like to have (primary care? Academia? What field?) but the road is long and fiendishly difficult. And more often than not, you'll have to ignore your other interests in order to be successful. This is something you have to be aware of.

I have wanted to be a doctor since I was 6 years old, but my motivations and reasons for it have changed a lot. I went from the naive, starry eyed I-want-to-be-like-that-guy-in-ER phase to the "wow! I really like science!" phase to the "I want to help people" phase, etc etc. I still feel strongly about all of those things, but it took me a while to figure out all the facets of medicine I could figure out before actually getting to med school. And most of all, I have LOTS of other interests, all of which have had to take a backseat many times, and all of which I'll have to put on hold while I'm in training. I love to write, I love music, I love performing, I love traveling, and I even loved the law for a while. I have wanted to be a professor, a pastry chef, a professional singer, a translator, a supreme court justice, and a writer. These aspirations are not going anywhere. But there's one thing I came to realize as I thought about what to do with my life: medicine would be the one thing I'd regret not doing.

So, I know it's scary as hell not to know what you want to do (I've always planned my life 10 years in advance too- and while I strongly advise you NOT to do that, and instead just go with the flow and figure things out with time, I'd be sort of a hypocrite in doing so, since I could never pull that off). However, the best way to figure it out is to really think about each profession analytically. What are the pros and cons of each? Would you really be able to be successful in all of those? What is the day to day life of each of those professions? Are you willing to make the sacrifices each entails?

For example, law is very interesting, but the day to day life of an attorney is basically revolved around writing briefs. It's also incredibly competitive once you're out of law school, since SO many people are attorneys. It can often be a rather soulless career. Are you sure you want to do that?

Business: an MBA is not really a professional degree the way a JD or an MD are. It's a career advancement degree. Meaning, you have to have worked in the business world for a few years before you can be admitted to an MBA program, and it's only worth it as long as you've got a career you're advancing (oftentimes, a company will pay for it). It won't really "help you get a job" in the traditional sense. What kind of business would you be going into? What are your reasons for it? If it's a matter of making money, let me warn you that in order to really make money in business, you often have to take serious risks. Are you willing to do that?

Etc, etc. Think about each carefully. You OBVIOUSLY don't have to choose now, and your performance as well as aptitude in college will dictate a lot of your career options. If you're a bad writer of English, you can't be a lawyer, sorry. If you're truly awful at science, you can't be a doctor. So go to college, figure out what you're good at, shadow whatever career you feel you'd like to pursue/ would be able to pursue, and go from there. But in the end, ask yourself: which one would you regret not doing?

Thanks for all your replies.

I did an assessment tool at school someday. It came up with family practice as the best career.

The assessment tool said I can practice medicine, take care of kids, manage your business and being a doctor involving teaching patients. .. And also for local community health and stuff like that.

Um.. I guess I will have to go to college and figure out eventually.

Yeah, you will eventually figure things out. It takes a lot of soul searching. Most college students don't know what to do, let alone high schoolers.

Here is how you can connect your interests and accomplish your dreams:

choose one field from biology, doctorate degree, school teacher
develop your career in this field
develop an e-commerce website where your "computer sciences, programming" skills will count
and I think in this way you can accomplish most (if not all) of your aspirations

no, it said you have to pay if you didn't take the PSAT, and i don't think he has. mine was free.
and i think a lot of doctors get annoyed with all the paperwork they have to deal with for insurance, etc. But if you like that kind of stuff, maybe you won't get as frustrated as many doctors do with it.
