I hope D-School Interviews aren't like this!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know a few dental schools do something kind of similar. U. Michigan and Ohio State both have you interview with several people in an MMI format. Each school does it a little differently but the premise is the same.

For what it's worth, I've done several MMI and they aren't too scary once you begin the session.

MMIs, at least the ones I've done (non-dental related), are a lot easier than one-on-one. If you can't find a good answer, you can always pick on other people's bad answers (in a positive way).

I don't get it. MMIs appear to be like multiple one-on-one's. I'm not sure if you are confused with group interviews.

Yeah, sorry, there are two types of MMIs used...multiple 1-on-1 interviews, or multiple mini group interviews

I like the idea that schools are trying to weed out socially inept doctors/dentists. Whether MMI's will succeed to do that remains to be seen.

Haha, I read this and I totally agree with it. It's super important to build social skills these days in any profession.

👍 Some ELS kids can take 100 english speaking individuals in no time. At least they tried learning 2 languages!

MMI are for medial students cuz they SAVE lives. I dont wana save a life, i wana be a dentist.

TBH
MMI is nothing to be afraid of (i've done them, they are sorta fun, being 100% serious here)
and if anything they actually favor students whose first language is not English

MMI are mainly tests of LOGIC and Critical thinking, and problem/communication skills of course

but to say they are better at weed out socially inept students could not be further from the truth, (yes anecdotal evidence, I'm in Canada and basically ALL health professional entrance interviews utilizes the MMI)
each MMI session is short and to the point, there are NO Conversations, No small talks, and rapport building skills are much less emphasized and factored into the evaluation

just to give an example (a typical MMI station at my school would begin like this: interviewee reads question posted on the door for 2 min, bell rings, him/her enter room, shake hand with interviewer, both sit down, interviewer asks "did you get a chance to read the questions?" Guy/girl says "yes", interviewer says "k go".

what MMI are good at, (imo) are making the interview process more objective and "fair"
everyone get the same set of questions, you get multiple first impressions, you are evaluated based on an aggregate average of multiple interview assessments

perhaps im just being cynical, but lastly i should point out that [mind you this is solely imo] that the main reason why schools are implementing MMI's is to save COST. it is Much more less expensive and logistically easier to hold MMI sessions than the tradtional interview methods.

I do suspect that more schools will learn towards this method of speed interviewing. It is a quick way to assess a large quantity of people. And you can get more people's perspectives on a candidate, because you have time to let that candidate meet with a whole room of people.

Solution, prepare a 1min. sales pitch for yourself. =)

talking about the "people skills" here, do the dental admission committee prefer the "people skill" over dental experience? such as shadowing? or knowing how to play an instrument?
I'm asking just because I'm having trouble writing my personal statement. I don't know if I should focus on the "people skill" or the dental experience within the limited space provided.
ps. I really lack dental experience. all I did was shadowing. And, I don't know how to play any instrument. soooo sad. 🙁
But, I have lots hospital experience and international health related volunteering experience.

So, the bottom line is what should I focus in my PS ?

HELPPP???
