I just got rejected from temple dental w/ a 3.3 gpa and they still havnt EVEN RECIEVED MY DAT SCORES because i only just took them in late august! THEY definitley did not get my dat scores so they rejected me based on everything else? wtffffff my scores havnt even REACHED THE SCHOOLS. WTF WTF WTF WTF. i thought my application was pretty good as a whole, and my DAT score is a 20. wtfffff????????? im pissed and disgusted. and of course admissions is closed on saturday so i cant call and ask them why they hate me so much. great.

Well thats just sad news on a Saturday.

Hope its a mistake

you're telling me. Im almost so mad that it hasnt sunk in. Im in shock. I didnt think i'd get rejected this early in the game, or at all from temple, for that matter!.........greattttttttttttttttttt

Just relax. Call up the school and have them investigate the immediate rejection. It could simply be a mistake. There's some schools that reject based on GPA (even without DAT scores), but at a 3.3...I highly doubt it...It has the makings of a mistake in my opinion. Call 'em up first thing on monday! I hope it works out.

Everything else should be gravy if you got a solid PS, DAT, GPA...so don't count yourself out early in the game...

What were your exact GPA's? Some schools have cut offs that are automatic rejections.

3.27 gpa, 20 dat but its not like they even recieved my DAT scores yet so i really just dont get it at all. whatsoever. i'm over it though i dont want to go here anymore.
and yea first time applying, first time taking the DAT. worse comes to worse i guess ill have to suck it up and take it again and reapply next year and NOT apply to temple bc now i hate them.
whatever.

i really dont understand how theyre judging me or what theyre basing their decision off of. i didnt know it was allowed to reject someone without even have their app complete. what if i had like a 28 dat hypothetically (just saying), theyre going to reject me based on my gpa? i just dont get it honestly

Some schools have a cutoff for low GPAs. I guess they want to see dedication to your course work and not just how well you studied for one exam. You should still give them a call and just ask about it. Also, you probably shouldn't hate a school for rejecting you if they have a legitimate reason.

This.

I hope you applied to more schools than just Temple. Even the best applicants hedge their bet and apply to several schools with at least one safety. Dental school is very competitive and applicants have to take rejections with a grain of salt. Don't cry over spill't milk.

dang, sorry bro. all you can do is call them and say, "i just retook my DAT and it will be sent out soon, could i be reconsidered". although i think temple was one of the schools that told me they won't "hold" your app and wait for the new DAT (similar to BU's policy).

remember, there are LOTS of people who apply to temple. they cant offer everyone wit good grades/DAT an interview. people are going to get cut. dont take it to heart to much! maybe you will get lucky somewhere else.

This one exam embodies the most relivent and practical level of knowedge you need to be successful in dental school; therefore, even though it is just "one test" it is a measure of both the validity of your gpa, and how well you're able to recall said information/apply it in this "one test".

Sorry OP. Hopefully with your DAT finished you'll get some interviews @ other schools.

yea i applied to more schools than temple which im waiting to hear back from. so we'll seeee. I'll call them monday even though i'll have a hard time being nice....

I would assume dental schools are also interested in an applicants ability to master their curriculum the first time around. GPA in my mind shows how dedicated a person is to their education. Sure, the DAT measures how well someone knows the material. However, most of the sections on the DAT are pretty watered down versions of the respective courses. Schools also want to see how well you did when you had to learn the more in depth material rather than how well you do after reviewing what you have already learned and regurgitating. Just my 2 cents though.

im not saying my DAT score is immaculate just because its a 20, i know its not. my point is, i dont get how they rejected me when they had no dat score from me (it wasnt a retake, it was my 1st time taking it in august, ever) at all. so my application was incomplete i dont get why they reviewed it. thats the point.

This has happened to people who apply to other schools. Some schools have cut offs. Perhaps you didn't meet them. We will only know when you call them and ask. There is nothing you can really do now.

The DAT is used to standardize and validate applicants. There are so many undergrad institutions out there that simply hand out A's .

I agree with what you said about gpa mayg. OP it will be interesting to hear... but realize in highly competitive processes they have to thin the herd in are what are somtimes arbitrary ways. Maybe the fact you didnt have a dat score made it easy for them to just not consider you?

although the DAT is just one single exam, it definitly requires TON of time and effort since its pretty much a cumulative of two years of pre-reqs. Not just one final exam for your bio class.. so yea good job on DAT, first of all!, and check with the school. but im sure ull hear from other schools too! good luck!

I honestly hope that you're kidding about the "I'll have a hard time being nice" part. I think that might be your problem...

^^^THIS! Good luck OP! Stay positive :luck:

GPA is also dependent on the school one is attending...some schools are just easier than others--it's just a fact. That's why standardized testing is necessary to at least somewhat even the playing field. How does it look if you're a Bio major with a 3.8 and yet only got 17 for Bio on the DAT? Learning in-depth material is meaningless unless you can retain in long term. The DAT is watered down but it's more than just "regurgitating"....I know people who pulled all nighters for pretty much all of their exams, got their A's and A-'s, and couldn't break 20 on the DAT.

Synthesis of multiple subjects long after you initially encountered them in a critical-thinking environment like the DAT is important.

clearly, lmaozedong1.
my problem would be they think im mean via reading my app ? haha okay. thanks for your stellar input.

No, but you sound like a whiny little *****. Grow up and stop acting like a ten year old when things don't go your way. :eyebrow: Don't make a thread every time a school says no. WAAAHHHH!!!

aright buddy, youre cool. hope that made you feel good for the day

True people believe that everywhere they apply they should deserve an interview. People w/ much better stats are getting rejected and people w/ lower stats are being accepted sometimes its weird like that. Yeah i agree w/ this guy regarding almost every week couple people create a new thread for rejection and they almost always claim that they deserve at least an interview there.

It did...now quit ****ing and go study to raise your GPA b/c apparently you need it.

lol... Relax buddy. Deep breaths

yea but its not one of those stupid rejection threads- the op actually has a messed up situation- how do you reject someone without seeing DAT scores?- it must be a mistake.
and temple doesn't have a cutoff atleast for a 3.3 gpa- its average gpa is 3.33 overall. and look at predents and you'll see plenty from 2010 that got accepted with equal to or lower gpa scores. unless you have a criminal record, somethings wrong.

and imaozedong1 i wouldnt be talking because your no "einstein" either bro

I believe what that guy is saying is that, why create a thread? When the obvious solution and suggestion ANYONE on this forum can give is to call them on Monday that's it...

+ Yes schools do reject people without their dat scores b/c there can be cut offs for GPA etc...

whoa, thats a little uncalled for 🙁 The guy is upset he got rejected as I am sure I (and most others) would be just as upset if my state school rejected me for ANY reason....

to OP:
it definitely sucks you got rejected, but like others said, it COULD be a mistake. I do however have a question: Why do you keep saying your DAT score hasn't arrived yet? If you took it late august, and AS LONG as you've specified temple as one of the schools to receive your DAT.... the DAT score should have been picked up by ADDSAS after your took it. My understanding is, ADDSAS sends updates every week. I am thinking (and I could be wrong here) that ADDSAS did pick up (automatically) your DAT score and sent it to the schools (hence the rejection)

While I sympathize with OP and I think venting on sdn is a good way to let it out, because people can give you constructive advice, I feel OP should have all his app materials ready when his app was submitted, everyone else did.

Let's just all play nice :luck:.

temple doesnt cut off for a 3.3
below 3 may be a dif story

in Adea book they say recommended 3.4 & dat 18

and the kid has a 3.3 with unknown DAT scores. You don't think he's worth considering? They accepted plenty with similar gpas last year and in the past, so it just doesn't add up.

OMG... I am sorry that you have misunderstood me. Yes I Strongly believe that the OP deserves and interview at Temple after all they should give preference to them. and their dat is a solid 20 i believe.

I am just saying make sure to check their cutoffs.

not all schools are the same, some are a joke. The DAT should level the playing field when it comes to that.

Maybe the timing of your application has something to do it? It's hard for me to think that taking the DAT so late in the application process is at all impressive. Are schools not searching for reasons to reject us? Just a thought.

why did you send them the money before ur dat arrive? i made sure my dat was mailed out before i sent my check.

Hey ... here is a concept that you might want to think about. GPA and DAT aren't the only things in an application. If they were, then we wouldn't have to add all the other crap, get letters of recommendatinos, etc. for the applications. The ADCOM probably looked at the overall package that the OP presented to them and they felt that he/she didn't fit the prototypical student they were looking for in their students. I know it has to suck to be rejected, but not everyone can get into dental school. Schools cannot interview everyone, so they must narrow their selection. It is unfortunate, but the OP just didn't fit what they were looking for this year (with or without the DAT scores). There is nothign you can do about it other than just suck it up and work on improving your application for next year should you not get into dental school this year.

One thing that I would highly suggest to the OP is to forget about this year when you apply next year because you definintely don't want to come across as bitter if you are fortunate enough to get an interview there next year. A

I couldn't agree more with NavyDDS. Why do people cry over rejections purely based on their GPA and DAT scores?

Then why the frig would I get 8 references to pick the best 4 to send out to ADDSAS?
Why the heck would I spend months on my PS?
Why would I bother with all those professional experiences?

why why why

Good question. There are schools that do a comprehensive review before rejecting you, while others do it on GPA or DAT alone.

From your tone and all those "whys" one might assume the extracurriculars (including PS, LORs, etc etc) are weighted just as much as the GPA+DAT combo.....While that might be true for a few schools, the fact remains that MAJORITY of dental schools weight the GPA+DAT combo the MOST when considering applicants. Its a bitter fact of the pre-dental process

I still think they rejected him cause they got his DAT score and simply weren't impressed enough.... other wise, how did they know he wouldn't be one of the rare few who land that 26+AA?

Anyways, this thread is meaningless until the OP comes back monday with an update regarding what REALLY happened.

I haven't read all the above comments but LORs can be a very strong determining factor for adcoms...

Some of you might remember the discussion from last year about this applicant... on paper she seemed to have reasonable stats but 2 years in a row she got close to 30 rejections.... and I'm sure there are hundreds of other students like her...sad but true!

Did you inform aadsas or Temple that you would be taking the DAT after you submitted your application?

Also, they could have rejected you based on a number of factors. I know people with really good stats that got rejected from Temple, so saying that you deserve an interview just based on your 3.3 GPA is unreasonable (especially considering Temple's large applicant pool).

Also, off topic but are you a chick or a dude?

You should def. call on Monday and ask what happened. What I often do in these kinds of situations where it is tactfully advantageous for me to be nice and cheerful to someone who has made me irritated is compose the e-mail I'd REALLY like to send those jerks. It usually ends something along the lines of "f*** off, yours truly, me." Then I share it with my friends, and we all have a good laugh (for some reason it's funny when I'm angry?). Don't actually send the e-mail (that should go without saying). But maybe if you got all the nasty things you'd like to tell them out of the way, it might be easier to be pleasant. Hope things go better for you and wishing you the best! Good luck!
