hi All,
I'll make this short, Iam predent and looking for a job as a dental assistant to support my family and acquire more experience + get some LORs, the problem is that I had a couple of interviews but didn't get the job bec/ I am missing my Radiology certification, I know you get your certification if you take the dental assisting corse but 2 years is just too long and I need the job now, I have tons of volunteer experience but apparantly I have to have this Radiology certificate, I know that many of you who are predents probably worked as dental assistants before, I heard,to get the radiology certificate, you don't have to take the whole dental assisting course, instead there is a specific book that you study from and then simply take the test , please let me know if you have done this before and know the name of this book or the material that they use for this test, and your help will be greatly appreciated

good luck to everyone :luck: and have a great weekend

I'm sure it depends on your state dental board. In Texas, you have a year from your hire date to get certified - you can just order the study guide and take the test. After September, though, we have to take a course (I don't think it's a 2 year associate program, though) to get the certificate. I talked to one dentist when I was trying to find a job and they thought I absolutely had to have it and they were wrong. Check your state dental board's website and see what the rules are.

I am a non registered dental assistant. My first boss paid for my Xray certification class about 4 months after I started working for him. I got a couple of this books about radiation safety, exposure times, etc, and I took a ninety question written test after studying those (easy!). Then attended a one time evening class to learn how to take xrays. I took and mounted 2 full sets and 2 extra sets of bitewings (2 hours or so). Then I had to take 3 full sets and 4 sets bitewings on duplicate films on patients (who signed consent forms) and mailed those in. The sent me certificate in a couple of weeks. So I think that it is pretty easy to get certified, but you have to be employed first. Maybe if you tell the dentist how easy it is he will be more inclined to employ you. P.S. I started assisting with 0 skills or dental experience, and loved it! Have fun!

I honestly think that if you're looking for a dental assistant job without any xray or dental tech certification, you're looking for the lower paying jobs ($7-8/hour). Then your salary MIGHT increase with experience. But if you're from San Diego, CA check out PDE (professional dental education?). That's where I got my xray cert, but it did not help me in getting a job since I used some connections I had through programs at school to get a dental tech job. Goodluck.
