this is my first post and i am in desperate need of advice...I was supposed to take the DATs june 29th right after i studied all may and june after classes ended and enjoy the rest of my summer, however it didnt go the way i wanted...during my finals i found out my uncle was diagnosed in a late stage of cancer spreading throughout his whole body...i live in new jersey and he lives in ontario so i took a week off of studying to go with my family to be with him because the doctors said no matter how much medications they give or chemo treatments he goes through, it will not help him...i stayed in canada since to be with him and could barely focus on DATs or even applications because of his health worsening daily...i was admitted to attend to Gateway to Dentistry in June 2010 and came back just to go to it for the 2 weeks because i was told i would be an idiot not to go to a prestigious program that only admits 30 people after receiving nearly 600 applications this year...as soon as the program finished i went back to canada to be with family during my uncles last few days and since his passing away at the end of july i totally blanked out and could not focus on anything...i pushed back my DATs and notified the DAT center of my family situation and was allowed to change the date to whenever i wanted...I sent my application a few days after my uncles passing and have not gotten the chance to study as much as i wanted too before taking my DAT...i pushed back the test to mid-september but i am guessing it will be to late...please anyone help or advise me on what to do? should i take the year off and apply next summer for 2012 or give it a shot in september? :-(

Thank you

Take the test and apply. If you have a solid GPA, DAT scores, LOR's, and EC's you still have a chance. Worst possible outcome is that you don't get in. In that case apply next year and strengthen your application while you are taking the year off.
