I know some of the RN programs (I want to say BSN) have a leadership component to them. Can you guys enlighten me what this is. More specifically, I'm curious how much "business" is taught in various Nursing Programs.

Do you guys have a desire to learn about it and do they teach it or not? Any particular topics that are of interest in the business side of healthcare?

Appreciate any education you guys can offer.

Usually in the BSN programs there is one business related course, covering things such as nursing management, staff and who does what, hospital hierarchy, types of nursing practices, a broad overview of healthcare finance, etc..

We barely touched on any business aspect in nursing school. We once did an exercise on staffing and budgeting...that was all. Leadership, at least at my school, was pretty much about how to be a leader/follower as a nurse...conflict resolution..basic leadership principles, change theory, etc.

I graduated with my BSN in 1994 and am finishing up my MSN. In my BSN program there was no "business" aspect and we touched upon leadership. I do think this changing as many new BSN program have courses dedicated to leadership in nursing. My MSN program has a HUGE focus on finance, budgeting, and leadership.

It's a BS class about BS. It's all common sense. How to (like said above) resolve conflicts, managing staff, ect. Slept through the whole thing in my BSN many years ago and still made an A.
