i need some real serious guidelines from people who scored 80 or above in verbal portion. how do you make out the meaning of most of the words? do you guys know the meaning of the words just because english is your first language or you work on vocabulary right before the exam from zillion of sources ? i will really appreciate any suggestion thank you.

I haven't taken the PCAT yet (I will this Sat), but I did score 740 on the SAT verbal. What I did to prepare was to study lists of words and quiz myself over them. Cover up the words and see if you can remember what they are based on their definition. I also took an SAT verbal class which helped me tremendously. However, since you have limited time, I would suggest you go to Google and type in "GRE vocabulary" and it'll give you some helpful links. Good luck.

Verbal is one of those things that's pretty difficult to cram or study for in my opinion.

You just gradually learn it over time by reading often.

Look at the roots of a word if you don't know what it is right off the bat and see if you can recognize a root meaning and decipher the full meaning from that.

Or just try to eliminate the words you do know immediately and make a good guess at it.

I made either a 98 or 99 in verbal (I don't really remember). I did not study for it, but I have a decent vocabulary. I'm always doing puzzles and I enjoy playing word games and reading books. The words on the PCAT were all words that I have heard of. They are, for the most part, every day words. The trick is using them in the correct context when doing an analogy problem. English is my first language. I can see where someone who is not a native English speaker may have trouble using them in context.

The best way to prepare is to read - newspapers, magazines, books, etc.
