I am a mechanical engineering major also pursuing a bioengineering minor for my dental school requirements and I was just informed that a few science courses opened up as technical electives towards my major. I only need 1 left and I am trying to decide between Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, or Molecular Cell Biology. I would like some advice as to which one I should take and the reason for that. Which looks the best when applying? Which is the most prevalent for the DAT or for Dental school?

That's a tough one because they could all be "useful". I emailed my target school's admission director a while ago with a similar question, and this was her response:

----"The courses that you named previously will prove to be very helpful. I would also look at taking the following if your schedule allows: histology, microbiology, genetics, and human anatomy"

-----The courses I mentioned were "molecular cell biology as well as an anatomy and physiology course".

Final Answer: You may want to contact a few of your "favorite" schools and see if they prefer any specific course. The courses you mentioned are "above" the pre-reqs of most dental schools, so it may come down to school preference, and what you find most interesting/in which class you think you can get a high grade. If you have to sign up for this class ASAP, I would probably vote for Molecular Cell Bio. Anatomy and physiology are very useful, but at its core, dentistry is focused on the teeth/mouth/gums/jaw etc. And I just think molec cell may look better for all the micro bio-esque classes we may encounter in dental school.

Just my 2 cents!!!

Thanks so much!

GSUgrad23 is totally right! not only some schools might prefer specific courses, but they might require them too! I think West Virginia requires Anatomy (don't quote me on that) and I know ASDOH requires physio and biochem on top of the other pre-reqs

True for above comments. From those 3 courses, I would choose Human Physiology.
1) Covers some topics of DAT.
2) The introductory topics from Molecular Cell bio should have been covered in intro bio.
3) I believe physiology is a requirement for many schools compared to human anatomy or molecular cell bio.

As said above, take a look are pre-requisites for schools you plan on applying to since some have specific requirements. In any case, I agree with LaughingGas, I would also choose Physiology.
