hello everyone,
I will begin my residency in FM this year and I want to ask what apps you use on your phone daily. I have several of the free ones but I am more asking about the expensive ones. I have tried the free epocrates and don't really like it or the price. I used to use tarascon on my windows phone and liked it much better. Does any one have any thoughts about 5 min consult, it is quite expensive as well as some other programs, but if it makes my first year easier it is well worth it. I guess what I am really after is-- what app could you not live without? Are there any other geeks in medicine besides me? 😛

thanks in advance

When I was in residency, I used Epocrates and 5MCC because that's pretty much all there was at the time.

Currently, I have:

Epocrates (free version)
All of the STATcoder apps
Shots 2010
MedCalc Pro (cheap)
mobile PDR (free)
MerckMedicus (free)
Medscape (free)
Medpage (free)
AHRQ ePSS (free)
MPR (free)
Micromedex (free)

Of all the general medical references, I find myself using MerckMedicus more often than the others. It includes Harrison's Practice, the Merck Manual, and the Pocket Guide to Diagnostic Tests. It gives you most of what you'd get in Epocrates Essentials at no cost.

You'll probably find AHRQ ePSS useful in primary care, as it deals with preventive care and screening recommendations.

Shots is very useful, although STATcoder has a nice immunization program as well that's pretty cheap. I have a sentimental attachment to Shots, however. 😉

I haven't found MPR all that useful in either the old paper version or the newer electronic version.

Hope this helps.

thanks so much blue dog,

I have the free epoc but it only lasts 3 days or so.

I can't try merckmedicus, or mobilePDR until I get my license number but I downloaded it 🙂 anybody know a way around this?.

shots is great esp the catch up (in my current population)

anybody out there who is at intern level have any apps that were your savior during first year?

thanks so much everyone

That's weird. AFAIK, the free version doesn't expire. It never has for me.

No way around it that I know of. Take a look at Micromedex, however. It doesn't require registration.

I'm also always looking for great iPhone apps.

I'd also like to suggest "MD on Call" and "Pocket Derm". Both cost a few bucks but are well worth it.

by no means medicine-specific...

...but i use the combination of goodreader (or any file reader for that matter), and perfect ocr. With this combo I can scan whatever handouts or references i come across throughout the day on the spot, email them to myself, and then load them into good reader. no more collecting handouts...

While e-mail works, another good way to easily transfer documents between your computer and the iPhone or iPad is to use iDisk (part of Mobile Me) or Dropbox (free).

hey guys,

blue dog brings up another point about this. Does anyone use an ipad daily? I believe my program will give everyone a laptop. How can I justify using the majority of my book fund on an ipad other than the fact I really want it  and I do not want to be left behind tech wise. (I really believe the future of med is tech--has anyone been watching watson compete on JPRDY?) Also I use google docs for my files, you can even print to any computer hooked up to a printer using google chrome, and you can access all your files via cloud.
