I am waiting three schools USC, NYU, and u of pitt(waiting list). but I do not expect to get in these schools.
so I plan to reapply for 2011 class. so I need some advice to be accepted for next cycle.
I submitted all material( except second DAT score I took Nov 1) to AADSAS at the end of Aug. I have more than 150 hours of shadowing experice and 100 hours of volunteer experice. and also I have 2 year military work expericece but I did not have research experience.
I am internatioal student.

this is my stats.
GPA : 3.45 sGPA : 3.47
first DAT : aa: 20(bio:21, gc:21 oc: 19) Rc: 16 QR: 24 PA 18
second DAT : aa: 20(bio 20, gc:21 oc: 18) Rc: 18 QR : 25 PA 19

today I got a rejection mail from BU. BU was my first choice.

anyway. I need you guys' advice. please~~~

I have a question. maybe you guys do not have an idea.
I transferred some courses(6 courses) from foreign country. but these GPA is 1.24/4.5.
I just transferred these to save money and time. I know that these GPA does not affect my AADSAS GPA.
is this bad ? I reget that I transferred these credits.

don't lose hope yet, you have a shot at usc, and did you interview at NYU? you probably have a shot there too. don't stress about BU. if you'd only be happy there, that's a different story.

i suggest starting to get your application ready now (just in case) rewrite your personal statement, get a job (if you are still in college--graduating this year) that will be beneficial and help your resume. Your DAT scores are competitive, I wouldn't waste the time retaking them. Instead focus on your essay, make it reflective, be honest.

If you apply early (June) you'll be fine for the next cycle. And stay positive. Also, maybe only apply early to a few schools (save the money), then add schools in late july --if by then it's sure you aren't in for 2006.

I hope this makes sense. Good luck.

thank you guys.

I had an interview at NYU(1/20) and USC(3/03).

I think you'd be in this cycle if you hadn't applied so late. Your scores look really solid and you probably still have a chance at getting in this cycle. You'll be fine next cycle so long as you apply early-have your essay prewritten, your references contacted, etc. BEFORE the first application day they open up the applications and then and submit everything on that first day. Also, go for broke next year- apply to 8 or 9 programs just to be sure. Good luck to you!

Why do you think you got rejected from BU. With those Stats and extra activities I think you should have gotten in. Did you think your interview went well? Who did you interview with?

Read the post completely, the OP is an international student. Schools tend to be a little picky when it comes to international students be it public or private. I know this is a fact for med schools (a friend from a top 20 school with a 3.97 in biochem and a 38MCAT didn't get into any US school he applied to, some told him on his face that his international status kinda muddled things up...he goes to SGU in the carrib). I'm pretty sure the same applies for dental schools, they don't bunch US applicants with intl. ones, kinda like instate and out of state...only country in this case. To the OP, Your GPA and DAT are pretty friggin good by the way....I'd check with schools and see what their deal is with intl. students.

After I posted my thread, I asked what my weakness is..
he/she said that my reading score is not good. I got 18. he/she said that I should aim to get 19 or over 19. i know that my reading is little bit slow. but 18 is not so bad.

I think that my interivew was good. it was just conversational interview.
he said that my DAT is good.

but I am rejected.

BU's average stats for accepted students, for this cycle, is 3.4 gpa and 21 DAT.

To the OP, you still have a decent shot to get in somewhere, just start getting things ready for next cycle in case you dont get in. Good luck.

to the OP

don't give up yet! no news is good news (though not as great as an acceptance) plus, they might also waitlist you--and i've known people who don't get off the waitlist until a few weeks before dental school started!

yeah yeah yeah......and Howard's average AA is 22.... 🙄 🙄

I think that you would have a good chance at USC and NYU. The waiting is the most terrible part of the process. The great thing is that you received interviews to all the schools.

Your transferred credits - do the grades show up on the transcript of the school that you are currently attending/or attended? If not then it's not a big deal. What courses are they? Are they prereqs for dental school? If so, I would retake these classes to get higher grades.

just course title is shown on the transcript. grade is S or U.
all courses are elective courses ( philosophy and art). but dental school want me to send foreign transcipt evaluation. so they knew my grade on these courses.

hmmm... I would say that 6 courses is not a lot of units and they are not prereqs. and they are not calculated as part of your AADSAS GPA - I think that it should not be a big problem. Just make sure you have an explanation if they asked you about it at an interview.

they did not ask me about transferred courses.
BU told me that my RC score is low. I got 18. she/he said that I should aim to score 19 or over 19.

I think that BU do not like international students.

I saw that one of people in this forum got 15 in RC and got accepted at BU.

Don't give up just yet. I feel your pain, being an international student applying to dental school this cycle. Your stats are pretty solid/good, I seriously don't know how much you can improve just by rewriting the DAT because your DAT is solid. There's still time, hopefully you will hear from NYU or USC soon.

thats because you have to be a U.S. Citizen/Perm Resident to go to med school.. dental schools are different -- they allow non residents to attend, and are willing to hand out visa's.. (have a friend who just finished OMS residency and wants to do the 2 years MD, but nobody will allow him since he is not a resident/citizen)

i don't know why you didn't get in with those scores buddy...i got in to BU 2 days after my interview 3 years ago with the same gpa and dat score as you...maybe it was your interviews...i don't know...research doesn't really matter unless you go to harvard or something...it just looks good...you can write all the experience hours all you want, but they must have seen something in your interviews they didn't like...better re-eval that...just reapply again...they could see that as determination factor...good luck...

2th_DK, the stats you got in with were much more competitive 3 years ago then they are today. The applicant pool has doubled since then and acceptance stats have risen across the board. I'm not saying that you are wrong in anything you stated, just feel that this is a very important variable that needs to be taken into consideration.
I agree that both your DAT and GPA look good......but you have already stated your problem. You're an international student and that puts you at a disadvantage. The only advice that I can give you is to get your application out as early as possible and move this discussion to the "International Dental" forum (they will be more help to you). Good luck to you, but I'm betting that you will get into NYU this cycle though.

I just checked the Internation Dental forum and there is a Boston University acceptance thread.......I didn't understand the stats that they were posting though 😕
