I really feel like killing myself because I don't know if I'd be able to make it

Whoa! Seriously, there is no way that you can include the word "already" and have it so messed up that you don't have a chance. Plenty of people start out weak and wind up being very impressive candidates.

This is a future JOB TITLE you're talking about. It's not the most important thing in the world. Certainly not something on which to base your entire self image. You need to talk A LOT, and get past this stage.

Take a deep breath, "step back," and think. Then think some more. Nothing is as bad as it seems. There are always ways to get past bad things.

as a doctor even though thats my dream. It seems so unattainable, since I messed up my GPA already
Don't give up so soon. Remember that getting into med school is not just about your GPA. Try to work harder, and strengthen other parts of your application. Even the seemingly strongest applicants feel nervous 'cos you never really know until you get that acceptance letter. Good luck.

I don't know how bad 'messed up' is but check out my stats. They aren't anything great and I got in (I also have 3 C's in science classes). If your GPA is low, rock the MCAT to show that you are in fact intelligent and able to handle medical school. Yes, there are tons of 3.9, 35+ people applying but there are also 3.5, 28-30's applying who get accepted. If you shop around you will find a school for you. Apply early and sell yourself. You can also take a few years off and explore the world. There are tons of non-trads applying these days as well. Lastly, keep in mind that SDN is filled with more of the upper tier applicants. Comparing yourself to them (as I once did) can be depressing, as it seems you are out of your league. So don't give up.

GPA is only one part of the equation! don't worry!! both my GPA's are not so great (<3.5) and I still got into an allopathic med school 😉

I hope that you are exaggerating.
Honestly, if you really want to go to med school. Get in contact with the admissions office now. Find 5 less competitive schools that you really like and find out what makes them unique. You'll be suprised to see how you feel about some of these schools once you learn a little more about them.

Then when you write your secondaries, it will show. admission committees get thousdands of apps from people who apply broadly. But if you've taken a summer class at that school or show a genuine interest in THEIR program, they'll definitely give you a second look.

Don't be so sad. If you've hit rock bottom, it only gets better
:luck:

I hope that you are exaggerating.

I hope so too. OP, I would go speak with a premed advisor (or any advisor in your major) to help you directly.

you're GPA cant be worse than mine. I have a 2.1 right now and i have 3 semesters before i apply. I still havent given up hope. As long as I get all A's from here on till i apply i can make a decent GPA.

If you're gpa is bad, then like others said put effort into MCAT, Ecs....and if you're still away from graduating, you still have time to pull up your gpa and adcoms like upward trends. If you cant do much about your undergrad gpa, then there's always post-bac.

I have 3 C+ grades in science classes and I have 5 acceptances so far (with an MCAT just slightly above average). Med schools clearly consider upward trends.

Upward trends are good. But you still need to hit 3.6ish by application time to be competitive. So, you know, do the best you can.

I think first and foremost, OP, you should take a deep breath. After taking a look at your post history, you seem to worry a bit too much. In fact, this was from a previous post you made:

I feel like I spend more time freaking out, then actually STUDYING. this is bad, god, I hope I can get it together soon

I can't seem to gauge whether you are serious with this current post or exaggerating. I would recommend speaking with someone to vent a little bit, and then hitting the books and just trying your best.

did you do a Post-bacc. or SMP? and are you a URM?

Nope, and nope. I have a pretty high cumulative GPA though (3.8x). Those classes were in my first 4 quarters of college and I've received As in everything since then. Plus I have a lot of volunteering, shadowing and research under my belt.

OP, I hope you are exaggerating, but if you are even remotely serious with the title of this thread, please talk to someone immediately. SDN is great, I love SDN, but this is not where you should be looking for support if you are thinking about suicide.

I was once there - I tried to study intensely but would start freaking out, realizing that I had no recollection of the paragraph I just read. People that are over stressed have suppressed cognitive abilities. Don't rack up a bunch of bad grades that you will have to explain later. You should see a therapist, maybe go to your school's counseling center, and seriously consider taking time off or withdrawing from some classes (assuming you are an undergrad.) Good luck.

These people are right on. Freaking out is not the answer, and if you're depressed and anxious, you won't be able to help your situation until you get yourself sorted out.

My advice: figure out what you really want to do. Ask yourself this: "will the post-nominal letters 'M.D.' be the only thing that will make me happy?" I hope your answer is "no." Will helping people through the healing process be a gratifying experience for you? I hope that's why we're all pursuing medicine. If you don't think you can become a doctor, then consider becoming a physician's assistant or a nurse practitioner. Not the same, but you're still taking part in patient care.

However, if you definitely want to become a doctor, figure out what you have to do to make it happen: stop going out, get 7 hours of sleep per night, avoid hardcore premeds, etc. That's what I did, and my grades ended up being pretty alright (not great, but not bad). I also raced at the collegiate national cycling championships, because being that focused allowed me to pursue more than one passion. It's trite, but it applies: "do what you love."

Good luck.

There are other jobs which are available that are just as fullfilling as a doctor no matter what kind of person you are.

Don't die for your dream, live for it. Realize there is pretty much always a way if you look hard enough. Maybe you could do a postbac, maybe you could look at DO programs, maybe you could go to a foreign program and prove yourself. As others have suggested, you should talk to someone. Don't just carry these feelings around with you. You might also want to take a close look at yourself-- becoming an doctor is great, but there are plenty of other things that make life worth living.

Well, if you do kill yourself, then you know for sure you definitely won't be able to make it.

In med school admission, these factors are among the most important, and here's where you stand on each of them:

culmulative GPA--unknown (your current GPA is not final, I assume)
MCAT--unknown (you haven't taken it, I assume)
rec letters--unknown (you haven't started to ask for them, I assume)
clinical/research experience--unknown (you still have time to do more even if you haven't done any, I assume)
community service/extracurricular activity--unknown (same as above, I assume)
AMCAS primary--unknown (you haven't entered the race yet, I assume)
interview--unknown (same as above, I assume)

Conclusion: NOTHING ABOUT YOUR ADMISSION HAS BEEN FINALIZED. But they will be if you just sit here, getting upset and doing nothing to improve your odds.

So, quit whining and put up a serious fight.

There's so much more to life than trying to become a doctor.
Plus, if this is what you want to do, then NEVER GIVE UP. Work your hardest, and be ready to go all the way to the Caribbean to pursue your dreams.
Do everything that you can to succeed. There's no such thing as too late.

As someone else said before being on sdn when you're feeling bad it may be hit or miss. Some will give you good feedback and others will not be at all sympathetic and give you, at the very least, bad advice. Just keep with it, and work hard, unfortunately throughout the road to becoming a physician there are probably going to be more times where things aren't going so well. At the very least, wait until you've applied and been rejected a couple times. haha, sorry kidding of course. Just don't give up, if you do that then you'll have no chance of achieving your dream. 👍
