Hello everyone! Sorry if this has been asked multiple times or if this is the wrong section but I really need some advice.

I'm currently going to community college at the moment. I'm working on transferring to a 4 year as a bio major then go med to school.

This last semester was definitely a hard one for me. I had to withdraw from my bio class because majority of the class was failing, I got a D in my general Chem II class, and I got a C in my calc II class. I will be retaking my Chem and Bio class and going to push for an A but will this hurt me a lot? I currently have a 3.0 GPA and I can get it up before I transfer after retaking the classes.

Sorry if I'm not clear but this semester just stressed me out because I'm not use to having a professor failing majority of the class. I just need to plan how I can make myself look better for medical school.

A little bit about me: I was an honors/AP student in high school who let work interfere with my school so I had to go to community college. I usually get A's and B's in college so I'm not use to failing but I have failed classes before and retook it and got an A. I want to become a pediatrician and I'm not going to be picky with medical school. Just any medical school I can get into CA will make me happy. Like I said earlier, I'm a Bio major and I'm doing to prereqs at community college then will transfer to a 4 year soon.

Thanks in advance guys!!

I think you already know that your low grades and failed classes will hurt your chances of getting into med school. The best thing you can do from now on is get the highest grades possible.
If you need time off from school to take a break and regain your motivation, take it. Don't take any more courses until you can be assured you'll do well. If you have ANY suspicion that you have a mental health issue or learning disability, bring it up with your family doctor.

Also, when you apply to med school, you should not restrict yourself to CA schools. Limiting your applications to a single state, especially if you're not a strong applicant, could mean you don't get in.

ESPECIALLY CA schools.

Applying only in California is a death sentence, especially if your grades aren't great. Virtually zero shot.

Thank you for the advice!! Any schools you recommend outside of CA I should look into?
Wayyyyy too early to figure that out. You need to see how you end up doing for the rest of your academic career first (especially due to the poor grades from last semester).

Study hard and you'll be OK

Hmm okay!! Thank you for advice and the motivation 🙂 I was beginning to think I messed up big time and wouldn't be able to get into med school.

Not at all. Take it from someone who had ~3.2 cGPA with 8 W's (took a semester off), an F in Gen Chem I, and a D in Gen Chem II (I retook them and received A/B) who received an acceptance. You'll be fine. I was going through similar stuff midway through my collegiate career (more family/personal related though). You just have to power through it.

A word of advice: Pad your application with non-academic activities interest you and stick with them. I think what really helped me this cycle was my plethora of extra curricular activities. I was President/VP of a prominent club for many years and was also involved in other clubs/groups on campus.

Really?! That's amazing! Congrats btw! Thank you for the motivation 🙂 I have a lot of extra curricular activities such as church leadership and hands on experience at a hospital and a lot more! It just worries me because my community college isn't the greatest. 11% transfer 15% graduate. I had a ton of professors already who failed the whole class (literally I mean 100% failure). Hopefully everything works out 🙂

Thank you so much again!
