Plz dont quote this post. I had an interview bout a week ago in a mid tier Cali school. Like the massive idiot I am, I kept getting text notifications. Whenever I did i apologized and ignored it because I didn't want to take my phone out during the interview. Why? Because I was nervous. And stupid. Mostly stupid. How much did i screw myself over?

Probably a little bit to be honest. Nothing you can do about it now.

Why didn't you pull it out and mute it after the second time?

Idk. I thought it would be more rude to take out the phone?? My smart logic.

It's the end for you. You'll never get in Conan. One truth prevails. Never have your phone on during an interview.

I can't sugar coat this, I'd mention to my Adcom that you weren't smart enough to silence your phone.

How do you think your preceptor would like it if you did that during Grand Rounds?

Enjoyed the reference. For real though, is it a deal breaker?

Honestly, too many variables in play to say, but it's not the most professional thing to leave your phone on when you've got one of the most important interviews in your life about to start. Let's just say all things equal, I'd pick the person who didn't have to interrupt our conversation multiple times due to their phone being on. It's over now though so you can't really do anything about it! Just know not to repeat it ever again!

Why didn't you turn off your phone to begin with? I saw this a lot during my interviews, people would pull out their phones during breaks, etc... like really? Guys, this interview determines the rest of our lives... turn the bloody thing off!

Once, you can usually look past it as pre-interview jitters and you simply made a mistake. Multiple times? No way. That reflects really poorly on you.

I always thought people put their phones on "do not disturb" then you wouldn't have to worry about the ringer but I guess not.

How many times did it go off and how long was the interview? If it beeped like twice in the first minute or two its bad but if it went off like 10 times every 5 min to be honest it looks bad/stupid/dumb/inconsiderate for not turning it off after the first noise

How many times did it go off? Twice I can understand, but anything past that is not good.

You don't need to turn it off or anything. Just mute it. Did you just forget?
One other thing I am curious though is, can I take photos of the school when I tour? I mean definitely not the students or cadaver without their consent but can I take photos of the classroom, hallway, etc.

Just put. The phone. Away.

I was using it for directions to the office, put it away and forgot about it. I did not use it once during my interviews...

3 times

Looks pretty bad. Just mute it w/ no vibrations. At one of my interviews they gave us #’s to call if our interviewer was MIA, so they expected us to have our phones. And I muted notifications on my Fitbit too so it wouldn’t buzz on my wrist.

Similar thing happened to me at my interview last week too! My interview was a 10 minute walk from the admissions office, so I used my phone for some navigation. It was cold out so I put the phone in my outer jacket when I entered the building and completely forgot about the pocket. Five minutes later, a persistent vibration could be heard from the coat rack in the doctor's office - the result of the on-demand dog walking service I contract for and an email based-job. The funny part is that I didn't realize it was going off until we started talking about how as a non-trad I would respond to managing the work-load of med school. Missed a perfect show and tell.

Edit: un quoted. Sorry

Its just one school.... don't make the same mistake at the rest. But yes. It seems you screwed your chances here.
