So last night I was in a dorm room with about 10 people. to make a long story short everyone that was in that room got a minor in possession. Im 18 turning 19 in about 9 days. Basically im pretty pissed because I think this goes on my record as a misdeamonor. Is this going to screw my dental school chances? Are they going to see this minor in possession and be turned off by it? The only thing I have going for me is that I am a canadian citizen so when they backround check me they will do so in canada I assume. This is my first run in with the police. I was also fined 180 dollars, but like I said since im not an american citizen, can I just not pay the fine? What would the american authorities do? The only thing is that they know what school I go to, so hopefully the school doesnt get involved. Im on a visa here so can I get deported for not paying?? Help please im in over my head and still pissed off.

We aren't legal professionals so I don't think you want to be asking for legal advice here. You're going to have to find yourself a lawyer and see if you can keep this from going on your record. Oh and don't even think about trying to skip out on that fine. You'll just compound the problem even further.

Wow, this is horrrible I have no money for a lawyer either. I think my only option is to just leave the US and go back to canada to finish school. I cant believe this is happpening right now. I pretty much failed at life here, well there goes dental school, maybe I should just drop out of college and sell real estate.

I am an international student as well, and I strongly suggest you check with your office to international scholars/students to see what they have to say about it.

From what I know, US is pretty strict about international students violating laws and what not. I have always been rather careful because I have heard horror stories about fellow international students commiting crimes and getting deported back to their own countries.

However, in your case, I believe a misdemeanor alone wouldn't get you into that much trouble, but you should really check with the office of international scholars/students to make sure.

Why not just suck it up, be a man, pay the fine, continue school, and just do well in school over the next few years. I assume your not applying this year, but maybe in 2-3 more?!?! If you show that you can be mature you'll be ok... DON'T TRY COVERING IT UP AND RUNNING, that doesn't show any ethics...

Man I really think that that sucks. I actually have a friend that got busted for participating in a mooning incident. He ended up just waiting a few years and then after that time he went and asked the school authorities if they would take it off his record after he explained his situation. They were nice so they took it off. Hopefully you were lucky too. If you think about it though, dental schools do background checks for this very reason. They don't want students jacking around getting drunk and partying when they should be spending their time studying and getting better at what they do. What were you doing there? I honestly hope though that if you really were at the wrong place at the wrong time that they will pardon the incident and take it off of your record because that will hurt if they do perform a background check on you. Good luck though and try to be on your best behavior. I don't mean to sound didactic but I really do think that it's for your own good.

Hmm, that would work if the OP only has this on his school record. He made it sound like it's on a state record, a rap sheet, so to speak. In which case, good luck getting the cops to erase something from your record.

Dude, the laughing head is brutal...ouch 🙁. I think that the whole situation is just really sucky.

I'm not laughing at the situation, rather the futile idea of pleaing with cops to get something expunged from their record.

The OP's situation sucks, no doubt, but that's what happens. Weed's illegal. Whether or not you or I think it should be illegal or not is neither here nor there. Sometimes you have to man up to your problems and move on with your life. Did you screw yourself? Maybe. But you probably won't get many good answers asking a bunch of 20 year old kids on the internet. Find a lawyer.

you can moan and cry about it buy step up and become that much better as a student and get better grades and a better score on your dat to show that it was just a screw up....

your only human!

and come on its not like you killed someone

I concur 👍

I second jigabodo's post.
I know a guy (international student from Turkey on a visa) who was charged with a misdemeanor, and when he paid the fine, he was allowed to finish his schooling here. Whether or not it stays on your record.. ask the counselor about that, too. In certain states (or at least, in California), Americans are allowed to take a class and have the misdemeanor masked from their record. I do not know how this might apply with non-Americans.

Good luck!

Like I said in my first post, we're not legal professionals so take everything said here with a grain of salt. Your only sure bet is to talk to a lawyer about your problem. Having said that... there have been applicants in the past with blemishes on their records and they still manage to get accepted to dental school, although they have to work a lot harder to get in.

Don't panic you'll probably be fine. I know kids who have a dui or mip and still got in. Just do a lot of community service to make up for it and don't let it happen twice.

dont worry about it man. people do get in trouble with law and MIP misdmeanor isnt that bad. it isnt even a felony. and do pay your fine. $180 dollars isnt even that expensive. you can earn that money in half-week if you get a job. if you are really considering about leaving your school bc of that, you are probably not ready for this pre-dental route at all since you are thinking like a little crying baby.

man up and just do well in school. everyone drinks in college it sucks taht you happened to get a ticket for it

When I was an undergraduate I majored in possession. Who ratted you out to the fuzz in a dormitory? You have a Ned Flanders in the dorm!

You have nothing to worry about if you just pay the fine and get on with your life.

possession-

Were you on the lease/contract as a legal resident of the room?
Did you, on your person, have any of the prosecutable unmentionables?
Did the men in black&blue directly see you, or do they attest to seeing you with, the aforementioned unmentionables?

IF NOT....get a lawyer anyway. Pay the fine, and yeah, after four years of study, etc..no big deal...it's probably just a misdemeanor, and could be adjudicated later on (expunged from record).

But if you're on scholarship, and risk loosing said funding...well...get a lawyer. Habeas Corpus, 9/10th's of the law (physical possession or possession by a contractually obligating domicile), etc. Stand up for your rights afforded to you by our Constitution. If it wasn't your room, if you weren't found with it...then get a lawyer...try and get free legal help...it's out there and ACLU types love this stuff.

Otherwise, not meeting the criteria above....take it like a man, or woman.

Actually it wasnt a minor in possession, it was a minor in consumption. I dont know if that is as bad, but I blew 0.045 which is well below the legal driving limit. But yea im not thinkin about dropping out of the pre dental route or anything but I am thinking about going to the University of British Columbia either next semester or next year. I like this school and all but I can't stand the chances of getting another Minor. In canada the law is 19 so I wont have any worries about breaking the law. Also, all the cops here know about me is my school and my first and last name, I dont have a social or anything like that. I figure I pay the fine, finish the school year and then finish my undergrad in canada. When I apply to dental school they will background check me in canada, and I dont have any records in the US, especially for a misdeamonor. I have

Oh my god chill out and pay the fine and get on with your life. It's not a big deal and there are far worse things you could have done to get in trouble with the law.

First of all, everyone and their mother knows that college kids drink. If anything you should be rejected for being dumb enough to get caught 😉

Secondly, whoever said that the committees wouldn't like to see that people drink because it wouldn't be good in dental school - I take it you aren't in dental school yet. Basically every night during orientation we all went out and got drunk. Then during the first week of class we still went out half the nights and got drunk. Hell, one of our professors came to one of the parties with us. I foresee much booze in my future and the future of my classmates.

So yeah, dental students definitely drink. And we still get by quite well.

Once again, don't worry about this. Just pay the fine.

yea im payin the fine, its the smart thing to do.

stay in school, a single misdemeanor's nothing on your records.

I'm 17 now. I want to be a Dentist. I got caught and got a Minor in Possession about 3 months ago. However, I don't think it will effect me to much when I apply for Dental School in 4 years. I also am doing Community Service to keep it off my record...
