I recently moved to Tyler, TX from Baton Rouge. In BR, I worked for CVS. I tried to transfer to CVS here but they didn't need any help. My best friend works for Target as a pharmacy tech and when I went to take her lunch one day, I struck up a conversation with the pharmacist. He later told her that he would like to hire me (we had talked about drive-thrus in the pharmacy, Target compared to the "big boys", i.e, Wags and CVS, etc)
I am very excited, I have worked for Target before (several years ago, in high school) and I can't wait. I am going to be making almost $4/hour more than I made at CVS (I was only making $8.25 there) And...NO DRIVE-THRU!!! 😀 and lower script count..with a good amount of techs.
I thought this was especially great though..I had requested a certain dollar amount per hour, and they came back with 75 cents an hour ABOVE that. Walgreen's still pays about a dollar more if you work their 24 hour store..but honestly, it isn't even worth it.
I am so happy about this!!
On the downside, my new school requires a couple of plant classes for a biology degree..and I am not enjoying plant morphology at all!

Have fun!! I work for Target in Buffalo, NY, I really enjoy it, and it seems they pay more than any other retail pharmacy I've heard of.

I think work experience at Target Rx is going to be a great thing for you. The lower script count makes it easier to learn more from the pharmacist since you have more time on your hands. I love target!

I wish I was back in East Texas again. I moved to Long Beach last year and so far South Cal is not what it's not living up to its rep. I don't care what other people say, but in East Texas you don't have to be a millionaire to enjoy life.

Goodluck with your new venture.

I think working for a busier store would bring in more opportunities to learn everything there is to know in a pharmacy...

Busy store would mean more people working, it would also mean more chances to come across a wide variety of medications especially the rare ones.

I work at a 24 hour store and throughout my experiences there, I've learned so much more than I would in a store with a lower script count.

Yes you do have to work a little harder, and not be able to sit around and chit chat while it's slow, but that is not why we become pharmacy techs for...

learn as much as you can... for it's going to pay off next time !!

I don't think that just because it is a bit of a lower script count you learn any less. It's all relative. At our Target, we do an average of about 140 scripts/day, but we also have less pharmacists and technicians. We have the same problems, and dispense the same medicines as the busier pharmacies. And we definitely aren't sitting around and chit chatting 🙂 I'm all for Target pharmacy, good people, pleasant patients (more or less), good pay, and you learn a lot. What more could you ask for??

target rocks! 250 rx/day with 170 tech hours and 2 full time and 1 part time pharmacist. Stores are only as busy as the experience of the staff. The more you get use to the busy life, the more efficient and faster you learn to work. So while we can do up to 300 on monday, its never really 'busy' b/c ppl know their roles and learn to work at faster pace!

We have "rotations" as P1's, which are probably less like rotations and more like shadowing opportunities. But I was really excited to see that I get to work at Target for one week next month. I can't wait! Mostly I just love their bottles (who knew something so ordinary could be made so extraordinary).

I just got a position as a Pharm clerk at Target Pharmacy! I'm taking the PTCE in Nov. so should be able to work as a tech soon. I think Target is a great company to work for...

off topic...does anyone know how much they start their pharmacy techs off at????

Congrats! You've made a good choice. I've been working for Target Pharmacy for almost two years now and I love it. From what I've heard about other companies and from what I've experienced at Target, I'd say it's probably one of the best pharmacies to work for. Have fun!🙂

I started at 10.25 in june of 2007, with no prior pharmacy experience

thanks for all the warm wishes!!
as far as learning more or less at a slower store, I feel like I will learn more. I will have more time and won't be working so fast that I don't really learn anything. I hardly even had time at CVS to see which drug was for what, a lot of us newer/younger techs had that problem..mainly becasue we had 2 techs who were the definition of lazy..they did nothing except use 80 hours of payroll every week! So we all had to pick up the slack.
and talking about starting pay, I'm starting at $11.75 and I have some experience..I got nationally certified in June. I asked for $11/hr and they offered $11.75. Walgreen's here pays $12.75 and the grocery store pays $12..but both have drive-thrus and I'd rather make less and be less stressed. So I feel like I'm getting a good deal.
Starting pay will really depend on what part of the country you're in and the cost of living. 😉

that's awesome...congrats!

does anyone know roughly how long you have to work as a pharmacy clerk before they promote you to a tech. I'm taking the PTCE in Nov. and would like to know how long I should wait before bugging the Pharmacist about getting trained as a tech.
