I'm not one to rant, but I don't burn out that easy. I'm like one of those birthday candles that re-ignites after you blow it out. But man, settling for one of my lower-choice schools is getting easier and easier to do. I just don't have the energy and vigor to put in the extra time to get noticed. It's funny when I look back to a few months ago, I'd work on my secondaries the night I got them and each night thereafter until they were finished. The excitement that accompanied the secondary process is long gone... oh yes.

I'm sure I'm not the only one in this pot. It feels as though this is one big therapy session or something. Sometimes I think I'm a total loser for checking this site so obsessively and franticly reading over the interview feedback, and then I realize, actually, I kinda am a loser.

It's funny though; at my last interview, the adcom superior asked, "so answer honestly my kiddies. How many of you went on SDN before coming here?" Five out of six hands went up, and all the while I was thinking, "LIAR!! LIAR!!" to the jive turkey lipstick trodden fembot that was WTC to join the ranks of the others.

Has anyone else met med students who seemed like they were only at school to get laid? At one interview, this guy was bragging to me about taking hundred dollar shots at some exclusive club and studying at the undergrad to pick up on "undergrad chicks". Reminds me of a bad episode of nip tuck. And then this other guy is telling me that he wants to go into IM and then gastroenterology because it's soo cool. Upon further prodding I got no other explanation. I hope the residency and fellowship directors place a high value on the coolness factor while sifting over their grabbag of candidates.

This charade has gone on too long.

Nah. But at a couple schools, it looked a lot of their med students are gonna be 40-year old virgins.

I also got burned out after most of my secondaries were done. I got tired of working full time and going home to write for another eight hours.

I get frustrated at this sort of behavior too. Some of the med students I've met are just...bonkers. I wonder how some of them managed to get in, and others are caught up with being God's gift to the world.

I have yet to approach med school but the same situation can be applied to current pre-meds at the university I attend. Every weekend most of them go out and drink as much as they can, go back to someone's house drunk and then get laid. No kidding, I have experienced this taking place first hand because I have low tolerance for alcohol and so I end up being the designated driver. The first time I drank a shot I fell my stomach turn inside out and almost passed out. Sadly partying has become a way of life for undergrads and grads attenting medical school, thanks to shows like nip tuck. Drinking and partying is okay by me, but must it be done every weekend? And on top of that its fustrating to see these people make it to med school when you know about 75% of them want to become doctors for the wrong reasons, mainly the monetary purpose. Thats my 2 cents... 🙄

I have heard some stories about a recent med school class. Most schools have an honor or professionalism code, binding the students to be rational beings and...well...behave like adults. In one case, a number of the students lodged complaints about M-F 8am classes, citing they violate the code and are "unprofessional." (For comparison, I start work at 7am after an hour commute) Another group of others planned a ski trip during the week (remember, these are your future physicians). They emailed their profs to get the class time off, but didn't receive a response in time, so they assumed they could ditch for free. When they got back, they were surprised to learn that they had been docked grades. The student group then lodged a counter-complaint, again citing that being docked for classes missed was "unprofessional."

LOL -- Now THAT is funny. Geez, you would think by Med school people would grow up!

I'm all for having a good time, but seriously, some interviewers try to talk to me like they're rushing for a frat and I'm their friggin' frat brother. I'm not 18 anymore. I'm over the drinking til I puke stage.

... really? the typical pre-meds that i know are the ones that don't party and don't celebrate and repress all happiness for the sake of good scores/good grades. if anything we get together and have dinner like... once a month. i'm not surprised that they'd want to enjoy themselves every weekend in med school. i actually wouldn't mind, as long as its not hurting them academically, i mean there are people that just don't need to study every single day to learn.

i think i'm missing something here. are these posts for real? what's so wrong about unwinding, having a few drinks and possibly getting some sweet action? we can all handle our booze at this point. i don't think students should get hasty with their partying or put it above their school work but there's always a time to get down with the get down. and when that time comes i'm gonna be at the doorstep with open arms. and med students dont get laid cuz they're med students, they get laid because they're human.

Thank you.

Work hard, party harder.

What gets me is that some people at interviews come off as total anti-social virgins or roofies-dropping frat ******. I think many are just trying to show off and be "cool" or too nervous to relax. Where's the middle ground?

Yeah, but it's a lot funnier when he shows up like this than when he makes the identical thread for the 4th time. I can put up with him making these posts if it's only once a week and the middle of some silly pre-med arguing. I was almost hoping he would tell us he suped up his stang.
Ok about the drunkenness of med-students: it's not for me, I guess I'm too old to drink till I puke, but if other people want to do it and they don't puke on me or anyone I care about then go for it. It doesn't affect me at all.
About getting laid: ain't nothing wrong with getting freaky, as long as ugly drunken chicks don't start hitting on me. I know big girls need love too and they've got a little more cushion for the pushin, but I'm gonna leave that to guys who want to give them lovin.

the bigger the waistband, the deeper the quicksand.

I don't think there's anything wrong with partying or having a good time, hell- I am a river guide for mostly class 4 and 5 whitewater in California. When I'm not here, I'm on the Grand Canyon. I've done my share, and I've babysat people on all sorts of substances- alcohol is by far the worst- it's the only time I've nearly seen someone drown, especially on guide trips - but there's a time and a place.
Who cares if people go out once a week and get drunk and laid? As long as they use protection -(Rocefin shots, given ventro-gluteal for gonorrhea, are the ONLY thing that have caused grown men to cry from pain in my experience... and I've seen breaks and all sorts of gnarly trauma).
I think that a lot of younger people who have been in school all of their lives should go out and experience working before they decide to commit to medicine. It's HUGE. I am appalled that kids (because that's what they're acting like) would take off for a ski week and then be surprised that they've been docked grades. In the working world, if you request vacation and your boss doesn't approve it specifically, you don't automatically assume you've got it...
Sounds like bratty behavior to me.
That aspect of medical school, specifically immature (although very bright) classmates with the feeling that they've got to be gunners, is exactly what worries me in entering this profession, and it's exactly the kind of human I never want to be, nor the kind of person I want as my physician.

Time for a glass of wine. 👍

This thread is almost like Rants and Raves on Craigslist. Weird.

PS, not trying to start anything, but I think that remark is kind of derogatory. My sister nearly died of anorexia... so maybe I'm sensitive to the attitudes towards overweight women, but I had to say something. Thanks.

not sure why it's derogatory, it celebrates larger women.

Ok, let me set things straight. No one in their right mind will object to your getting drunk and laid all night sexscapade. I don't care about that and neither does the guy sitting next to me. But what bothers me is the "freshman in college" first time away from home mentality of it all. Does this sound familiar? "Man I was so Wasted last night!!!" "Dude you were so drunk last night!!!" Yeah, I thought so. So why has it transcended into graduate studies?

Great, go out and have a good time. Maybe if I knew you, I'd want to know all the grusome details. But for God's sake, stop bragging! No, I'm not impressed that you gave some girl a near-death-experience from a latex allergy during your first sexual encounter. No, I'm not rushing your frat and I don't wish we could drink alcohol during the interview tour. I also don't like you when you abandon all professionalism and greet your classmates with obsenities in front of patients. Remember, no one likes a show off!!

I don't see why this is so outrageous. A lot of schools you can skip lectures as much as you want provided you're there for exams. Also, I hear in the working world they "pay" you "US dollars" in exchange for spending your days there.

Hey dilated,

Obviously they knew they were treading in dangerous waters by skipping class. Otherwise they wouldn't have asked for permission.

And yes, you can get paid to work. If you're inferring that you should be paid to attend class, I think you're missing the point.

Would it have impressed you more if he elaborated that he always wanted to stick fiber optic cameras up people's bums, and now was able to get paid to do it? I think stopping at cool was appropriate under the circumstances. 😀

I haen't mentioned it (until now), but I have to say, I was really impressed by the thread title. It didn't really have anything to do with the rest of the thread itself, but combined with the drifting, almost stream-of-consciousness narration in the opening post, it made this one of the more existential threads I've read since coming to SDN. Bravo. 👍

Yes but this "pay" revolves around a "schedule" that your "manager" makes, and if you don't put in your request for time off by a certain deadline, you don't get approved for vacation. Welcome to the realm of the real, dude (or dudette).

The point is that the med school "kids" acted like spoiled children and made an assumption that was wrong without having explicit information. If you "assumed" that a patient's left leg was to be amputated but didn't check in for the specific information, then wouldn't you feel like a ****** if you took off the right leg? Extreme example, but I'm just trying to make a point.

If it's a job related to college (as in, you work on campus), they should understand if you let them know in advance.

Thank you!

We all work hard, and don't have all that much free time. Going out for drinks and partying takes only a few hours, is a social event, and is a great way to unwind and forget about your stresses for a bit. As long as we're not talking about how trashed we're getting and how much we're getting laid in front of patients I don't see the problem here.

Now the bragging about geting wasted and screwing loose women or whatever in front of patients is over the line, but that's a pretty extreme example; I've never heard of anything like this happening before. I tend to think these examples are not so much a medical student mentality and more an individual's idiosynchracies (I will be shocked if I spelled that word right but I just had to use it because I've never used that in a sentence before and this was a perfect opportunity).

But really, if you guys and gals keep up the attitude that medical students shouldn't be out drinking and partying in their free time you'll be very bitter and disappointed when you end up in medical school. 50% or more of your classmates probably will be going out once or twice every couple weeks - not every week but fairly regularly, and especially after any exam. And when your choice of conversation topics the next Monday are 1) "So what enzymes require Vitamin B6 as a cofactor?" or 2) "Man I got so wasted on Friday night," guess what people are going to want to talk about? It's not that they (we) are in medical school for the wrong reasons just because we like to have fun. We do care about helping people and becoming good doctors, but we also want to live our lives as well.

The medical students speaking like this in front of interviewees maybe are making a mistake - I suspect that some of them are doing this so that they don't look one-dimensional in front of interviewees. That's kind of selfish - you guys aren't there to hear about their lives, you want to know about the school. Personally I wouldn't bring it up unless you asked me what I did for fun in my spare time or something.

As far as the skipping lectures thing - if lectures are mandatory and they skipped lecture, it's their own fault if they get grades docked. But mandatory lectures are kind of ridiculous at this point. I attend pretty much every single lecture even though we aren't required to, but people learn by different methods. I've attended quite a few lectures that have been totally useless and a huge waste of time, but I find I learn best when presented with information in several modalities, and a lot of the lectures are good. If my classmates are learning the material without attending lectures, who cares if they come to class or not? I really don't see the problem.

That's exactly it. They want to sound like they have lives and fun. But they are in med school, so chances are the drunken debauchery nights are few and far between. Probably a reverse correlation between how much they brag and how much they have lives outside of the library -- an insecurity thing. Give them this little bit of saving face. 🙂

Wasn't trying to be harsh, just trying to make a point.
Right now, I work full time in a clinic and were I to take off without requesting vacation, I'd be fired. Similarly, if I were to take off in the summertime from the Merced or Tuolumne rivers without telling my boss or having the time explicitly requested, I'd be fired. And I know how much work is involved in both places, so I wouldn't do that to my peers. It was just a point about the working world, and it doesn't matter what the job is - and I was trying to parallel it to the scholastic issue but honestly, who really cares? We're having this bizarre hypothetical argument that most people seem to agree on anyway.

I think people should have fun in their lives, whether in school or not.
Everything in balance.

So river guides aren't allowed to express their opinions? Let me tell you a little story. So I take this day rafting trip in South America with this one rafting company. Now before signing up, I had asked around a little bit, you know, to find the best deal, adventure, people who knew what they were doing, etc. From what everyone said, this one rafting company was totally sketchy, and no one recomended them. So what did I do? I took it of course. Hey, they were cheaper. About two hours into the trip, there was a pretty heavy section of river that no one wanted to have anything to do with. So we got out of the raft and walked around it. But one of the guides decided to float the raft down the section while holding onto a rope that was tied to it. Rafts are pretty heavy even though they are mostly air, so I guess it made sense at the time. Besides, these guys were professionals. Anyway, he had the rope wrapped around his hand and thumb, and when it went down the section, whoomp! off came his thumb!! He didn't scream or anything. Everything was so loud cause the river and all; he just stared at the river and looked shocked. So to follow up on my point, never tell a river rafter to chill out, dude.
